Deadly Lagos-Ibadan Expressway collision renews concerns over reckless driving, weak traffic enforcement and recurring fatalities on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways

A tragic road accident along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left six others injured, once again exposing the deadly consequences of reckless driving and poor compliance with highway safety regulations on one of Nigeria’s most dangerous transport corridors.
The fatal collision, which occurred at the Saapade Bridge axis of the expressway in Ogun State, involved a commercial passenger bus and a heavy-duty truck. Preliminary investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicate that the crash resulted from a combination of illegal highway reversal, excessive speed, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving.
The incident has reignited concerns among road safety experts over persistent violations by commercial drivers and articulated vehicle operators despite repeated public safety campaigns by regulatory authorities.
Ten Lives Lost in Devastating Collision
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that 18 people were involved in the accident.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Odunsin, the victims comprised 15 adult males, two adult females and one male child.
The crash claimed the lives of nine adult men and one male child, while six other victims—four adult males and two adult females—sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Two adult males escaped the accident unhurt.
The collision involved a white Sinotruk truck with no visible registration number and a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus bearing registration number EKY 290 YM.
How the Crash Happened
According to the FRSC’s preliminary findings, the truck driver allegedly attempted to reverse on the expressway after missing his intended route.
The dangerous manoeuvre reportedly created an unexpected obstruction on the highway.
Investigators said the oncoming Toyota Hiace bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to squeeze through the narrow space created by the reversing truck but rammed into the rear of the heavy-duty vehicle.
Road safety officials attributed the crash to multiple traffic violations, including:
- Illegal reversal on an expressway
- Speed violation
- Wrongful overtaking
- Dangerous driving
Safety experts note that reversing on expressways is among the leading causes of fatal crashes because motorists travelling at highway speeds often have little or no reaction time to avoid unexpected obstacles.
Emergency Rescue Operation
FRSC rescue personnel responded swiftly to the emergency, providing first aid and evacuating injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
The bodies of those who lost their lives were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara, pending identification and further procedures.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, have taken custody of both damaged vehicles while arrangements have been made to clear the accident scene and restore normal traffic flow.
FRSC Issues Fresh Warning to Motorists
Reacting to the tragedy, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased while wishing the injured speedy recovery.
He described the accident as avoidable and urged motorists to strictly obey traffic regulations.
The Sector Commander warned commercial bus operators, truck drivers and other road users against dangerous practices such as reversing on highways, excessive speeding, reckless overtaking and other forms of traffic violations.
He emphasized that motorists who miss their routes should proceed to designated turning points rather than attempt illegal manoeuvres capable of causing catastrophic crashes.
Recurring Death Trap on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport arteries, carrying thousands of commuters, commercial buses and articulated trucks daily.
Despite ongoing reconstruction, improved road infrastructure and intensified patrol operations by the FRSC, the highway continues to record numerous fatal accidents linked to speeding, fatigue, overloading, poor vehicle maintenance and dangerous driving.
Road safety analysts argue that while infrastructure improvements are important, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, deployment of intelligent surveillance systems and stiffer sanctions against traffic offenders remain critical to reducing highway fatalities.
Public awareness campaigns, they say, must also be strengthened to discourage behaviours that continue to claim hundreds of lives annually.
Need for Stronger Enforcement
Transportation experts have repeatedly called for increased installation of speed cameras, automated traffic monitoring systems and stricter enforcement against commercial transport operators who violate road safety regulations.
They also advocate mandatory refresher safety training for truck drivers and commercial vehicle operators, particularly those travelling long distances on Nigeria’s interstate highways.
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action involving the FRSC, police, transport unions and state governments to reduce avoidable road deaths.
As grieving families mourn another devastating loss on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Ogun crash serves as a painful reminder that most road accidents are preventable.
With illegal highway reversal, speeding and dangerous overtaking continuing to claim innocent lives, safety advocates insist that stricter compliance with traffic laws, improved enforcement and greater driver discipline remain the most effective tools for preventing future tragedies on Nigeria’s highways.
