ABUJA — The political temperature in Nigeria’s ruling camp is rising ahead of the 2027 general elections, as fresh tensions between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) intensify over a fast-expanding “Rainbow Coalition” initiative.

The dispute, which critics warn could fracture President Bola Tinubu’s political alignment, is also being interpreted by party insiders as part of a deeper scramble for relevance—amid growing ambitions around the 2031 presidential race and the next National Assembly power equation.

Wike’s Tinubu Backing Triggers APC Governors’ Warning

Wike, despite serving in the APC-led federal government, has openly promoted efforts in Rivers State described as a Rainbow Coalition aimed at mobilising support for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

But as the idea gained momentum, the Chairman of the APC’s Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma made what observers read as an indirect warning against any political arrangement that could weaken Tinubu’s prospects or dilute APC cohesion.

Uzodimma later reiterated that the governors’ electoral commitment remains exclusively to APC candidates at all levels, arguing that any external alliance capable of undermining re-election efforts would not be entertained by the forum.

What Wike Says: Coalition for Tinubu, Not Blanket APC Support

Responding to the criticism, Wike insisted his support for Tinubu was not synonymous with support for APC candidates across states.

Through explanations delivered via his political communications apparatus, the minister argued that the coalition is not an APC project, but a broader platform for political parties and aligned actors backing Tinubu while positioning the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to compete vigorously in other elections.

Wike further suggested that the political challenge should be addressed at the state level—rather than using the presidential contest as a trigger for intra-party agitation or public sentiment campaigns.

PDP Camps Split the Narrative: Accusations, Counter-Accusations

While the APC governors defended the integrity of their electoral line, the PDP leadership and factions responded in sharply contrasting tones.

The PDP leadership associated with Tanimu Turaki (SAN) mocked the APC governors’ concerns—accusing the ruling party of underestimating a “monster” it helped empower by allowing Wike to operate within APC structures while maintaining PDP identity.

In turn, Wike-aligned PDP elements defended the minister as a political force that “cannot be discarded,” insisting that even with presidential-level support for Tinubu, the PDP intends to field candidates and challenge APC governors and legislators in 2027.

Governors’ Communiqué: “No Alliance That Creates Confusion or Divided Loyalty”

At the end of their meeting in Abuja on Monday night, Uzodimma read a communique that stressed the Progressive Governors’ Forum would not participate in, support, or endorse any alliance capable of:

  • undermining the re-election of President Tinubu,
  • weakening the APC, or
  • adversely affecting any APC candidate.

The forum also insisted its campaign structure would remain aligned with APC expectations—arguing that APC candidates are sponsored under the party’s architecture and cannot be substituted through parallel political arrangements.

Wike Escalates: “Politics Is Local—Resolve State Issues First”

Wike’s latest rebuttals broadened beyond the immediate disagreement, presenting a political argument that governors raising the issue should focus on governance and election strategy within their states.

He also questioned why, in prior elections, certain APC victories occurred despite what he described as relatively low presidential voting outcomes—arguing that voters were not confused and that election results reflected genuine local support patterns rather than alliance confusion.

The minister further dismissed claims that his support for Tinubu amounted to abandoning the PDP, describing critics as politically “lazy” and urging stakeholders to prioritise the presidential contest first—before shifting attention fully to state elections.

Investigative Findings: Insiders Link the Rift to 2031 and National Assembly Control

Sources within political circles, speaking on condition of anonymity due to lack of authorisation to comment, suggested the clash is not only about the Rainbow Coalition—rather, it is tied to strategic competition for 2031 presidential influence, including vice-presidential positioning and control of the next National Assembly.

According to these insiders, both Wike and Uzodimma are said to be strengthening networks and recruiting political actors into rival camps, with each seeking advantage ahead of future national leadership decisions.

The sources also suggested the rivalry has played out repeatedly through campaigns, funding proposals, and alleged behind-the-scenes manoeuvres during previous electoral cycles and national legislative dynamics—creating a pattern of mutual suspicion among presidential allies.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 election cycle, the unfolding showdown between Minister Nyesom Wike and APC governors led by Hope Uzodimma is deepening into a question of party cohesion, electoral strategy, and succession politics.

While Wike insists his pro-Tinubu stance remains separate from APC candidates at state level, the Progressive Governors’ Forum warns that any parallel alliance capable of producing confusion—or divided loyalty—will not be tolerated.

Whether the dispute stabilises or escalates may determine not just the tone of the 2027 campaign, but the strength of President Tinubu’s re-election narrative as internal players position early for 2031.
