The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has rescued a hearing and speech-impaired teenage girl discovered wandering alone along a roadside in Osun State, raising fresh concerns over child safety and vulnerability.

The NSCDC, through its Osun State Command, confirmed that the unidentified teenage girl was found during a routine patrol by operatives who observed her in a distressed and disoriented state. According to officials, her inability to communicate verbally or respond to auditory cues heightened concerns about her safety and immediate welfare.

Upon discovery, the officers swiftly moved to secure the minor and transported her to a safe facility, where she is currently under protective custody. Authorities disclosed that preliminary assessments indicate no visible signs of physical harm, but emphasized that comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations are being arranged to ascertain her overall condition.

The agency noted that the girl’s condition presents significant challenges in establishing her identity and origin, as conventional means of communication remain ineffective. In response, the NSCDC has initiated a coordinated tracing mechanism involving local community leaders, child welfare agencies, and relevant government institutions to locate her family or guardians.

Officials further revealed that efforts are underway to deploy alternative communication strategies, including sign language interpretation and collaboration with specialists, to better understand the girl’s background and circumstances leading to her separation.

Authorities Launch Multi-Agency Efforts for Family Reunion

The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable persons, particularly minors with disabilities, stressing that the girl will continue to receive adequate care, protection, and support services pending successful reunification.

The Corps also appealed to members of the public with useful information that could aid in identifying the girl or locating her relatives to come forward, assuring that all information will be treated with utmost confidentiality.

Security experts and child protection advocates have described the incident as a reminder of the heightened risks faced by children living with disabilities, urging stronger community vigilance and improved social protection frameworks.
