Agency launches full investigation into alleged sale of children under guise of care arrangements

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has dismantled a suspected child trafficking network in Enugu State, rescuing two minors allegedly sold under the guise of orphanage and care arrangements.
The agency disclosed that the operation followed intelligence reports linking a 51-year-old suspect, identified as Thaddeus, to the alleged trafficking of the children to his uncle, identified as Elies.
NAPTIP Launches Rescue Operation
In a statement released on its official social media platforms on Wednesday, NAPTIP said its operatives carried out a coordinated rescue operation in Enugu State following credible intelligence.
According to the agency, the operation led to the successful recovery of the two minors believed to have been victims of an illegal child trafficking scheme.
“The suspect, Thaddeus (51), is alleged to have been involved in the sale of two children to his uncle, Elies,” the statement read.
The agency warned that the development raises serious concerns over the exploitation of vulnerable children through fraudulent care and orphanage-related arrangements.
Rescued Children Receiving Protection, Care
NAPTIP confirmed that the identities of the rescued children are being protected in line with child protection regulations and victim support protocols.
The agency added that the minors are currently in safe custody where they are receiving medical attention, psychological support, and other necessary care.
“The children, whose identities are being protected, are currently in safe custody receiving necessary care and support in line with the Agency’s victim protection protocols,” the statement added.
Investigation Expands To Uncover Wider Network
NAPTIP said investigations remain ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to identify other persons connected to the alleged trafficking operation.
The agency disclosed that it is working to uncover the full scope of the network and ensure all individuals found culpable are prosecuted according to the law.
“The case remains under active investigation as NAPTIP intensifies efforts to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network and ensure that all persons found culpable are brought to justice,” the agency stated.
Public Urged To Report Suspicious Activities
The anti-human trafficking agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities linked to child trafficking and exploitation.
NAPTIP noted that the latest operation forms part of its broader nationwide crackdown on trafficking syndicates and illegal child adoption networks.
Renewed Anti-Trafficking Operations Nationwide
The agency recalled a recent operation carried out in April in collaboration with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), during which 47 Nigerians were intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while attempting to travel to Cairo, Egypt.
The individuals were subsequently placed under protective custody for profiling and support while investigations into the suspected trafficking ring continued.
The latest rescue operation in Enugu underscores growing concerns over child trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable minors in Nigeria. As NAPTIP intensifies enforcement actions against trafficking syndicates, authorities are urging stronger public cooperation and vigilance to combat the menace and protect children from abuse and illegal exploitation.
