RIYOM, Plateau State — October 3, 2026

A fresh tragedy has unfolded on Nigeria’s roads as the death toll from a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo Road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State climbed to 21, according to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The accident—reported to have occurred on Friday evening—involved a truck that reportedly suffered brake failure, leading it to crash into other vehicles travelling toward Jos. The collision also involved a Hummer bus and a motorcycle, dramatically increasing the severity of the impact.

Scene Assessment

FRSC officials in Plateau State visited the accident site on Saturday, conducting an on-the-ground evaluation of the extent of damage and the number of victims affected.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, led the assessment alongside the Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Joseph Udoabba, who confirmed the latest figure after reviewing the crash scene and recovering information from the incident response process.

Fire After Impact Traps Victims

Investigators stated that the Hummer bus caught fire following the crash. As a result of the impact and subsequent blaze, several victims were reportedly trapped inside the vehicle, contributing to the high casualty count recorded in the incident.

FRSC Pinpoints Brake Failure as Trigger

Officials said the truck’s brakes reportedly failed, preventing the driver from stopping in time. The vehicle then rammed into the other road users, intensifying the crash outcome.

FRSC authorities stressed that while mechanical failures can sometimes occur, proper vehicle maintenance—especially on critical components like braking systems—remains essential to preventing avoidable tragedies.

Calls for Tighter Vehicle Checks

After the assessment, FRSC officials urged motorists to exercise greater caution and warned vehicle owners against neglecting routine checks.

The FRSC specifically advised that:

  • drivers maintain safer speed limits and follow road safety rules,
  • vehicle owners conduct regular inspections of braking systems,
  • vehicle faults be addressed immediately to prevent loss of life and preventable crashes.

Traffic Management and Recovery Operations

Meanwhile, the FRSC said it continued efforts to manage traffic around the crash site and coordinate the removal of affected vehicles.

Officials Confirm 21 Deaths After Saturday Site Visit

The updated death toll was confirmed by FRSC leadership following on-scene assessment on Saturday.

Brake Maintenance Remains Key Focus for FRSC

The FRSC linked the crash to brake failure and urged vehicle owners to prioritize regular maintenance and checks.

As Nigeria continues to record frequent fatal crashes on major highways and inter-state routes, the Hawan Kibo incident reinforces the urgent need for stricter vehicle inspections, safer driving habits, and prompt enforcement of road safety standards—factors the FRSC says can help reduce preventable deaths.
