Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah has thrown his administration’s full weight behind the ongoing investigation into the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air aircraft at Benin Airport, assuring Nigerians that passenger safety will remain the airline’s overriding priority.
The governor’s assurance follows Thursday’s aviation incident involving Enugu Air Flight 4264, an Embraer E170 operating from Lagos to Benin, which experienced a runway excursion during landing.
Although the incident caused anxiety among passengers and crew, authorities confirmed that all 63 passengers and five crew members escaped without fatalities or reported injuries, an outcome widely described as a relief amid growing public concern over aviation safety.
The incident has attracted nationwide attention, coming at a time when Nigeria’s aviation sector continues efforts to strengthen operational safety, regulatory oversight and public confidence.
Governor Expresses Sympathy to Passengers and Crew
In a statement personally signed and released on Friday, Governor Mbah sympathised with everyone aboard the aircraft, acknowledging the emotional impact of the incident.
“The Enugu State Government is aware of the incident of a runway excursion affecting Enugu Air, Embraer E170, Flight 4264, operating into Benin Airport from Lagos on Thursday, July 23, 2026,” the governor stated.
He expressed gratitude that no lives were lost and that no injuries had been reported.
“The government empathises with the 63 passengers and five crew members on board the aircraft over the traumatic experience and is thankful to God that no life was lost and no injuries have so far been reported.”
NSIB Investigation Receives Government Backing
Governor Mbah commended the prompt response of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) for commencing an investigation immediately after the occurrence.
He described the swift action as critical to determining the sequence of events and identifying any contributing factors.
“The government commends the swiftness of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) in embarking on the ongoing investigation to determine the circumstances and factors that may have led to the incident.”
The governor assured aviation regulators that Enugu Air would cooperate fully with investigators throughout the process.
According to him, the state government is committed to ensuring complete transparency while awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
Safety Takes Priority Over Profit
Governor Mbah stressed that the operational philosophy of Enugu Air places passenger safety above commercial considerations.
He maintained that the airline was established on a corporate culture that prioritises safety ahead of schedules, profitability or operational convenience.
“While the outcome of the investigation is awaited, the government assures the public that the operations of Enugu Air are guided by the highest safety standards.”
He explained that the airline’s quality assurance and quality control systems are designed to exceed industry benchmarks, with rigorous internal procedures intended to minimise operational risks.
According to the governor, these standards have contributed to growing passenger confidence and increasing patronage since the airline commenced operations.
Confidence in Enugu Air’s Operations
Despite the incident, Governor Mbah expressed confidence in the airline’s safety management system and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professional aviation standards.
He said Enugu Air would continue to operate in strict compliance with regulatory requirements while remaining focused on safety, professionalism and quality customer service.
“The airline is founded on a corporate culture that places safety above profit and schedule,” he stated.
He added that the airline would continue serving passengers while adhering to its operational safety commitments.
Public Support Appreciated
The governor also thanked Nigerians for the widespread expressions of concern and solidarity following the incident.
He noted that many passengers and members of the public had shared positive experiences about flying with Enugu Air since its launch approximately one year ago.
“We wish to express our profound gratitude to Nigerians for the outpouring of solidarity since the unfortunate incident,” Mbah said.
He described the public support as encouraging and reaffirmed the government’s determination to continue building a safe and reliable state-owned airline.
Understanding a Runway Excursion
A runway excursion occurs when an aircraft departs the runway surface during take-off or landing, either by overrunning the end of the runway or veering off its sides.
While runway excursions are regarded as serious aviation occurrences requiring formal investigation, they do not necessarily indicate pilot error or mechanical failure.
International aviation protocols require investigators to examine several possible contributing factors, including:
- Weather conditions;
- Runway surface and condition;
- Aircraft mechanical performance;
- Air traffic control communications;
- Operational procedures;
- Human factors; and
- Airport infrastructure.
The NSIB investigation is expected to determine the precise cause of the Benin Airport occurrence and recommend measures, where necessary, to enhance aviation safety.
Importance of Independent Safety Investigations
Under international aviation standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), accident investigations are conducted primarily to improve safety rather than assign blame.
Experts note that independent investigations help identify systemic issues, strengthen regulatory oversight and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The NSIB is expected to publish its findings and safety recommendations after completing its investigation.
Broader Implications for Nigeria’s Aviation Sector
The runway excursion has renewed attention on aviation safety as Nigeria continues expanding domestic airline operations and encouraging greater air connectivity.
Industry observers say transparent investigations and timely implementation of safety recommendations remain essential to sustaining passenger confidence and protecting the country’s aviation record.
They also note that the incident presents an opportunity for regulators and operators to reinforce safety management systems across the sector.
Governor Peter Mbah’s swift endorsement of the NSIB investigation and his assurance of full cooperation underscore the Enugu State Government’s commitment to transparency and aviation safety.
While investigators work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the runway excursion, the absence of casualties offers reassurance that established emergency procedures functioned effectively.
For Enugu Air, the findings of the investigation will be closely watched by regulators, industry stakeholders and passengers alike, as the young carrier seeks to maintain public confidence while reinforcing its commitment to safe, reliable and professional air transport.
