Imo governor pushes regional alignment with ruling party ahead of next general elections.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has described the South-East’s voting pattern in the 2023 presidential election as a “political accident,” insisting it will not recur in 2027. He made the remarks during a strategic meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Owerri.
Uzodimma spoke while hosting leaders of the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
The meeting, held at the Government House in Owerri, focused on party unity, internal cohesion, and preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The governor said the South-East’s overwhelming support for Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in 2023 reflected what he termed a “wrong national political calculation.”
He maintained that the region must realign with the ruling APC to remain politically relevant at the national level.
According to Uzodimma, increased participation within the APC would position the South-East to attract more federal attention and developmental benefits.
“We must work to deliver votes and ensure stronger representation at the centre,” he said, expressing confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would secure broader support in the region in 2027.
The governor also called for discipline within party ranks, warning that internal contests ahead of primaries should not fracture party unity.
APC Pushes South-East Political Realignment
Uzodimma emphasised the need for the region to align with the ruling party, arguing that political inclusion at the federal level is key to influence and resource access.
He added that efforts were ongoing to stabilise the South-East politically and strengthen APC structures across states.
Kalu Criticises Abia Government, Backs APC Takeover
In his remarks, Deputy Speaker Kalu said the APC must win Abia State in 2027, both in the governorship and presidential vote.
He criticised the current administration in Abia, alleging underperformance and overreliance on publicity rather than measurable development.
Kalu contrasted this with what he described as visible governance outcomes in Imo State under Uzodimma.
Other APC stakeholders present echoed calls for unity, discipline, and coordinated mobilisation ahead of party primaries.
Uzodimma’s comments signal an early and coordinated APC strategy to reclaim political ground in the South-East after the region’s strong opposition tilt in 2023. The push for alignment with the federal government reflects a broader contest for influence, resource allocation, and electoral control ahead of 2027.
