British monarch calls for stronger transatlantic cooperation on Ukraine, security, and global challenges

Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, has urged the United States to strengthen ties with its Western allies in a rare address to Congress, warning that global challenges require collective action.
The speech comes at a time of rising geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Addressing a joint session of the US Congress, Charles emphasised the enduring alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States, describing it as resilient despite historical disagreements.
He stressed that the scale of current global challenges—including security threats and geopolitical instability—demands closer cooperation among Western nations.
The monarch called for sustained commitment to Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since 2022, urging “unyielding resolve” to achieve a lasting peace.
His remarks come amid diplomatic strains between US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, particularly over policy differences on Iran and broader international strategy.
Focus on Shared Democratic Values
Charles highlighted the shared democratic traditions between the US and UK, referencing the historical influence of the Magna Carta on American constitutional principles.
He underscored the importance of checks and balances in governance, noting that executive authority must remain subject to legal constraints—an observation that drew strong reactions from lawmakers.
The monarch described Congress as a “citadel of democracy” and reaffirmed the foundational legal and institutional ties between both nations.
Defence, Security Ties Remain Central
Charles also emphasised the depth of defence and intelligence cooperation between the two countries, describing their security relationship as deeply integrated.
“Our defence, intelligence and security ties are hardwired together,” he said, highlighting ongoing collaboration in military and strategic affairs.
Earlier, President Trump welcomed Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House, describing the UK as America’s closest ally and reaffirming the longstanding “special relationship.”
The address signals efforts to reinforce Western unity at a time of geopolitical strain. It also reflects ongoing diplomatic balancing between the US and UK amid policy disagreements that could impact global security coordination.
