Opposition raises concerns over alleged government influence in the Nigerian Bar Association election as claims of security agency involvement and electoral interference intensify.

Nigeria’s political climate has witnessed another round of accusations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the Atiku Media Office alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are attempting to influence the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election as a precursor to manipulating future national polls.
The opposition media office described the alleged interference as a dangerous encroachment on the independence of one of Nigeria’s most influential professional bodies, warning that the developments could undermine democratic institutions and erode public confidence in future elections.
The Presidency had not publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
Opposition Raises Alarm Over Alleged Government Influence
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the Atiku Media Office, speaking on behalf of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, accused the Federal Government of extending what it termed the “politics of coronation” into the affairs of the Nigerian Bar Association.
According to the statement, the administration is allegedly attempting to impose a preferred candidate rather than allowing members of the legal profession to freely elect their leadership.
“We are concerned that President Bola Tinubu has brought his state-sponsored toxic politics of coronation to bear on the election of the Nigerian Bar Association,” the statement said.
The opposition argued that democratic institutions cannot thrive where governments are perceived to influence independent electoral processes.
‘Test Run’ for the 2027 General Elections?
The Atiku Media Office further alleged that events surrounding the NBA election reflect a broader political strategy that could be replicated during the 2027 general elections.
According to the statement, the alleged attempts to influence the NBA leadership contest mirror what it claims is an ongoing effort to weaken opposition political parties and consolidate political control.
It alleged that internal crises within opposition parties, institutional pressure and judicial interventions are all part of a wider plan to shape future electoral outcomes.
“This same strategy of imposition without allowing for free, fair and credible elections is what the Tinubu-led APC administration is working assiduously towards in the 2027 General Elections,” the statement claimed.
The media office further accused the administration of attempting to undermine democratic institutions while positioning itself for electoral advantage.
No evidence was provided in the statement to substantiate the allegations, and the Presidency has not issued an official reaction.
Claims of Judicial Pressure and Candidate Disqualification
The opposition also referenced media reports alleging that government officials sought to influence the NBA electoral process through legal actions.
According to the statement, attempts were allegedly made to pressure the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) into disqualifying prospective candidates considered unfavourable to government interests.
It argued that such actions, if proven, would represent a significant departure from the NBA’s long-established electoral traditions.
“The NBA election remains the sole responsibility of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) appointed by the NBA National Executive Committee under the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended),” the statement maintained.
The media office warned that political interference in professional associations could set a dangerous precedent capable of weakening democratic governance.
Security Agency Allegations Deepen Controversy
Adding another layer to the controversy are allegations made by former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, who claimed that the Managing Director of the company providing electronic election services for the NBA poll was detained by individuals suspected to be operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Odinkalu alleged that the official was intercepted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, while travelling to Abuja.
He further claimed that electronic devices, including the official’s laptop and mobile phones, were confiscated during the incident.
According to Odinkalu, the action was allegedly connected to interests supporting a particular candidate in the NBA presidential election.
Neither the DSS nor the Federal Government had publicly confirmed or denied the allegations at the time this report was filed.
Opposition Warns Against Undermining NBA Independence
The Atiku Media Office urged government officials to refrain from interfering in the affairs of the legal association and allow the Electoral Committee to conclude the election without external influence.
It argued that the NBA occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and should remain free from political manipulation.
The statement also criticised what it described as attempts to postpone or frustrate the election, alleging that some government officials were acting in concert with security agencies to influence the outcome.
It further claimed that the alleged developments offer insight into how the APC intends to conduct the 2027 elections.
Why the NBA Election Matters
The Nigerian Bar Association is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential professional organisations, representing thousands of lawyers across the country.
Its leadership frequently plays critical roles in constitutional debates, judicial reforms, electoral litigation, human rights advocacy and governance issues.
Legal analysts note that any perception of external interference in the association’s electoral process could raise broader concerns about institutional independence and public confidence in democratic governance.
Presumption of Innocence and Official Response
As of press time, neither the Presidency, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Department of State Services (DSS), nor the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) had issued official statements responding to the allegations raised by the Atiku Media Office and Professor Chidi Odinkalu.
