Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stepped up political engagements following the defection of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku met with Kwankwaso and ADC National Chairman David Mark in Abuja to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening the party and promoting good governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the meetings, Atiku described his consultations as opportunities to chart the party’s course toward democratic renewal and policy-driven governance.

“I paid a courtesy visit to the residence of my brother and partner, His Excellency Rabiu Kwankwaso. We had quality discussions on the progress of our party, the ADC, and how we must continue the work to ensure good governance and recovery are achieved in good time for the people,” he said.

Atiku also visited ADC National Chairman David Mark, noting that the discussions provided a platform to reinforce party structures and restore confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Kwankwaso’s defection on Monday has added momentum to the opposition, with analysts noting that his extensive grassroots networks could boost the ADC as a vehicle for politicians seeking alternatives to the ruling party.

The formal reception of Kwankwaso and his supporters by David Mark was described as a pivotal moment for Nigerian democracy. The event at Kwankwaso’s Miller Road residence in Kano drew prominent figures including Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal.
