A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has launched a scathing attack on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, declaring that he would “never become President of Nigeria.”

The outburst follows controversial remarks by Obi comparing some pro-democracy figures from the NADECO era to the late military ruler Sani Abacha.

Fani-Kayode Condemns Obi’s Remarks

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Fani-Kayode described Obi’s comments as offensive and insensitive to the memory of those who fought for democracy during Nigeria’s military era.

He argued that Obi’s statement “assaulted the senses” and disrespected victims of dictatorship who lost their lives, freedom, and loved ones during the struggle for democratic rule.

“To mock the memory of those that died fighting for democracy in the June 12 struggle and sacrificed their lives as members of NADECO is unacceptable and unforgivable,” he said.

“You Will Never Be President”

Escalating his criticism, the former minister dismissed Obi’s presidential ambitions outright.

“You shall NEVER become President of our nation,” Fani-Kayode declared, in what marks one of the most direct personal attacks in Nigeria’s evolving political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi’s Controversial Statement

The controversy stems from a statement by Obi in which he described it as a “historical irony” that some individuals who once fought for democracy now govern in ways worse than the dictatorship they opposed.

“What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy… now find themselves worse than the man they opposed,” Obi stated.

He further suggested that Abacha could be remembered as “more democratic and more respectful of human rights” than some contemporary political actors, adding that “power reveals character.”

Although Obi did not mention specific individuals, the remarks triggered widespread political reactions.
