Bandits Attack Kwara Communities, Abduct School Proprietor, Bride’s Mother, Others in Coordinated Raids

Suspected bandits have launched coordinated attacks on several communities in Kwara State, abducting residents and injuring others in late-night raids.

The incidents, which affected parts of Isin and Ifelodun Local Government Areas, have heightened fears over rising insecurity in the region.

Security sources confirmed that the attacks occurred almost simultaneously on Wednesday night, targeting Iwo Odo-Ore in Isin LGA and Gaa-Idera and Gaa Dembo-Agunjin in Ifelodun LGA.

In Iwo Odo-Ore, at least five residents were abducted, including Alhaji Yusuf Yunusa, a local politician and school proprietor, alongside four other residents.

Sources said Yunusa had been preparing for a family Islamic ceremony scheduled to hold in Lagos before the attack occurred.

In Ifelodun LGA, six persons were reportedly abducted in Gaa Dembo-Agunjin, while two others were kidnapped in Gaa-Idera. Among those abducted was the mother of a bride-to-be, as well as another individual linked to a wedding ceremony planned for Thursday.

The attackers also rustled cattle during the raids, compounding the losses suffered by residents.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants opened fire during the operations, leaving at least two people injured, including one victim who sustained a gunshot wound to the hand.

Security sources described the attacks as highly coordinated, raising concerns about the operational capacity of armed groups in the area.

Coordinated Night Raids Across LGAs
The near-simultaneous nature of the attacks suggests a level of planning and coordination among the perpetrators. Communities in both Isin and Ifelodun LGAs were hit within the same timeframe, overwhelming local response efforts.

The latest incidents underscore growing security challenges in Kwara South, where rural communities have increasingly come under threat from bandit groups engaging in kidnappings and cattle rustling.

The attacks highlight the spread of banditry beyond traditional hotspots into North-Central states like Kwara. Persistent insecurity in rural areas threatens livelihoods, disrupts social activities, and raises concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures.
