The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, and four other officers over the unlawful killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

The Force said the officers will also face criminal prosecution following the outcome of internal disciplinary proceedings.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, confirmed the development, stating that the decision was taken after a thorough review of the incident.

The victim, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was allegedly killed on April 26, 2026, in an incident that sparked widespread public outrage.

Police authorities had earlier claimed that Ogidi was apprehended while attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

However, subsequent investigations found that the officers involved acted outside the rules governing the use of force.

Disciplinary Action and Legal Process

Following the incident, ASP Usman and members of his team were arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters for investigation and disciplinary action.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved their dismissal and recommended prosecution, with the decision forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

The action was based on findings by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which reviewed the case and concluded that the officers violated established procedures.

Violation of Firearms Regulations

According to the police panel, the officers acted in “gross violation” of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms.

The committee recommended immediate dismissal for all officers found culpable.

“Upon dismissal, all officers will be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide,” the police leadership stated.

Zero Tolerance for Abuse of Power

Reaffirming the Force’s position, the IGP emphasised that no officer has the authority to take a life outside the provisions of the law.

“No uniform confers the right to take life unlawfully. Any officer who violates this principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.

The dismissal and impending prosecution of the officers signal a renewed effort by the Nigeria Police Force to enforce accountability and restore public confidence. The case also underscores ongoing concerns about extrajudicial killings and the need for strict adherence to rules governing the use of force by security agencies.
