As public discourse over the future of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) intensifies, a nationwide opinion poll conducted by NOIPolls has resurfaced, revealing that Nigerians overwhelmingly want comprehensive reforms that make the scheme more beneficial to graduates and national development.
The poll, conducted in July 2021, identified employment opportunities after service, geographical posting reforms, discipline-based deployments, skills acquisition and improved welfare as the leading expectations of Nigerians regarding any proposed overhaul of the NYSC scheme.
The findings have gained renewed significance as policymakers, education stakeholders and youth groups continue to debate proposals aimed at repositioning the nearly five-decade-old programme.
Employment After Service Emerges Top Priority
According to the NOIPolls report, 24 percent of respondents identified job creation after completing the mandatory one-year national service as the most important reform.
The result reflects persistent concerns over graduate unemployment, with many former corps members struggling to secure meaningful employment after completing the programme.
Analysts say the finding suggests that many Nigerians now expect the NYSC to serve as a bridge between higher education and sustainable employment rather than merely a compulsory national assignment.
Posting Within Geographical Zones Receives Strong Support
The survey showed that 23 percent of respondents favoured posting corps members within their respective geographical zones.
Supporters argue that such an arrangement could reduce security concerns, lower transportation costs and improve the welfare of participants while still promoting national service.
However, critics caution that restricting postings geographically could weaken one of the NYSC’s founding objectives of fostering national integration and cultural exchange among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.
Calls for More Relevant Professional Placements
Another 13 percent of respondents advocated posting corps members only to organisations related to their academic disciplines.
Education experts believe such placements would enable graduates to acquire practical experience, improve employability and contribute more effectively to organisations requiring their expertise.
Many employers have also argued that discipline-specific postings could increase productivity while providing graduates with valuable industry exposure.
Optional Participation, Skills Development and Welfare
The poll further revealed that:
- 10 percent believe participation in the NYSC should become optional.
- 9 percent called for serious investment in entrepreneurship and skills acquisition programmes.
- 8 percent prioritised improved welfare packages, including better accommodation, allowances and working conditions.
- 14 percent expressed other reform suggestions not specifically categorised in the survey.
These responses indicate that Nigerians expect the NYSC to evolve into a more practical, youth-focused programme capable of addressing contemporary economic realities.

NOIPolls concluded that Nigerians desire a stronger, more relevant and youth-centred NYSC scheme.
The report identified the major reform priorities as:
