Security forces in Imo State have repelled another deadly attack allegedly carried out by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network, in a violent confrontation near the Owerri Airport axis.

The attack, which occurred along the strategic Owerri-Aba Road on October 29, triggered a fierce gun battle between suspected armed separatists and operatives of the Counter Terrorism Unit attached to the Imo State Police Command.

Authorities said the swift security response forced the attackers to flee, leaving behind weapons, ammunition, and a vehicle, while renewed concerns grow over persistent armed violence and separatist-linked attacks across Nigeria’s Southeast region.

Ambush Near Airport Corridor Sparks Panic

Police sources disclosed that the confrontation began around 6:30 p.m. when approximately ten armed suspects travelling in two vehicles allegedly launched an attack on police patrol teams near the airport corridor.

The Owerri-Aba Road remains one of the most sensitive security routes in the region due to its strategic connection to commercial and transportation networks.

According to the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, operatives of the Counter Terrorism Unit responded immediately to the ambush.

“In an act of valour, our operatives effectively countered the attack,” Okoye reportedly stated.

Security analysts note that attacks targeting patrol teams and security checkpoints have become increasingly common in parts of southeastern Nigeria amid ongoing separatist tensions and anti-government violence.

Suspects Flee As Weapons Recovered

Police authorities confirmed that one suspected attacker was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while several others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

Investigators said the fleeing suspects abandoned a Mercedes Jeep bearing Lagos registration number AAA 101 GR at the scene.

During recovery operations, security operatives reportedly seized an AK-47 rifle, fifteen rounds of live ammunition, and an IPOB/ESN flag believed to be linked to the attackers.

The recovered items are expected to form part of ongoing investigations aimed at tracing the identities and operational networks of the suspects.
