LOMÉ, Togo — Nigeria Premier Football League champions Rangers International survived a tense CAF Champions League preliminary-round battle against Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap, advancing to the next stage after a 5-4 penalty-shootout victory in Lomé on Friday.
The Enugu-based side were pushed to the limit after another 1-1 draw in regulation time, following the identical scoreline in last weekend’s first leg in Abeokuta. With neither team able to establish an advantage across the two legs, the tie was ultimately decided from the penalty spot.
Rangers missed their opening penalty, immediately placing the Nigerian champions under pressure. But the Flying Antelopes recovered their composure as Sobemap faltered twice from the spot, allowing Fidelis Ilechukwu’s team to escape with qualification.
The victory keeps Rangers’ continental campaign alive, but the manner of their progression raises questions about their ability to withstand stronger opposition as the competition moves into a more demanding phase.

The next round will provide the clearest indication of whether the Nigerian champions have genuinely developed into a team capable of reaching Africa’s elite club stage.
What Rangers Must Fix Before the Next Test
The immediate achievement is qualification, but the underlying performance will demand attention.
Rangers have now played two preliminary-round matches against Sobemap without winning either inside 90 minutes. While the penalty victory is what ultimately counts in terms of progression, the inability to close out the tie raises tactical and psychological questions ahead of a potentially tougher opponent.
Ilechukwu’s task will be to ensure that the relief of qualification does not obscure the lessons from the tie.
