Imo lawmaker secures overwhelming backing across opposition parties after Chinda’s defection to APC reshapes minority leadership structure in the House of Representatives

Abuja, Nigeria —A major political realignment is unfolding in the House of Representatives as 61 opposition lawmakers have endorsed Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, for the position of Minority Leader.
The endorsement follows the defection of former Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that automatically created a leadership vacuum within the opposition bloc.
Documents obtained from lawmakers indicate that the endorsement was formally submitted to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, seeking ratification in line with parliamentary procedures.

Of the 81 opposition members in the House, 61 lawmakers reportedly signed the nomination, reflecting broad-based support cutting across party and regional divisions.

Citing Order 7, Rule 7, they argue that the selection of minority leadership positions is strictly the prerogative of opposition members.
According to sources within the caucus, the nomination process followed extensive consultations aimed at preserving unity within the fragmented opposition bloc.
