The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has sent a message of appreciation to former United States mayor Mike Arnold, commending his public stance on Nigeria’s security challenges and allegations of targeted violence. The message was released on Saturday through Kanu’s legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

In the statement, Kanu expressed gratitude to Arnold for what he described as efforts to “shed light on the truth” about him and the IPOB movement, saying such interventions were rare in global discourse on the issue.

According to the message, Kanu said he admired Arnold’s willingness to speak publicly despite competing narratives surrounding the situation in Nigeria.

“Dear Mike, I am writing to acknowledge your remarkable effort in shedding light on the truth about me and my people,” Kanu stated. “Your commitment to the truth is commendable.”

He added that stronger global advocacy could have influenced earlier outcomes in the ongoing dispute involving IPOB.

Kanu also pledged continued alignment with IPOB in supporting voices he considers sympathetic to the group’s position.

“You can count on the support of the Indigenous People of Biafra and myself. May Elohim guide and protect you always,” the statement read.

Broader IPOB Position

The development follows renewed statements from IPOB praising Arnold and members of the United States Congress for raising concerns about killings in parts of Nigeria.

The group, in earlier remarks, reiterated its call for a United Nations-supervised referendum on Biafra’s self-determination, insisting it remains its central demand.

IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said the group welcomed international attention, describing it as validation of long-standing claims about insecurity and violence affecting parts of the country.

The group further alleged widespread attacks across several regions, including the Middle Belt and parts of the South, while insisting that its eastern base remains comparatively stable under its affiliated security structure.

Arnold’s Position

Mike Arnold, an American political figure and investigator who visited Nigeria in 2025 as part of a fact-finding mission, has publicly described parts of the violence in Nigeria as targeted attacks on communities.

He has also warned that denial of the scale of insecurity could worsen the crisis, urging greater international scrutiny.
