Abuja Court Remands Man Accused Of Stabbing Neighbour, Victim’s Hand Amputated After Attack

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Jabi, Abuja, on Wednesday further remanded a 32-year-old man, Steven Friday, over allegations of stabbing his neighbour during a violent altercation that reportedly left the victim with an amputated hand.

Justice M.S. Idris ordered the continued remand of the defendant, citing concerns over possible retaliatory attacks and the safety implications surrounding the case.

Defendant Faces Attempted Culpable Homicide Charges

The Police arraigned Friday on a two-count charge bordering on attempted culpable homicide.

According to the prosecution counsel, Donatus Abah, the defendant, who resides in Angwan Tiv, Zone 7, Lugbe, Abuja, allegedly stabbed his neighbour, Theophilus Edache, following an argument between them.

Abah informed the court that the stabbing caused severe injuries to the victim, resulting in the amputation of his left hand.

The prosecution added that the alleged offences contravened Sections 229(1) and 248 of the Penal Code Law.

Judge Declines Immediate Bail Consideration

During proceedings, defence counsel, Noah Abdul, argued a bail application on behalf of the defendant.

However, Justice Idris declined to immediately consider the application, stressing that his priority remained the wellbeing and safety of the victim and all parties connected to the matter.

The judge recalled a previous culpable homicide case where an accused person, after being granted bail, was allegedly tracked and killed shortly after release.

“Upon the release of the accused from the prison, he was trailed and killed on the farm. I am not in a hurry to consider the bail application,” the judge stated.

Court Proceeds With Trial

At the resumed hearing, the prosecution confirmed that the victim, Theophilus Edache, alongside two other witnesses, was present in court and prepared to proceed with the trial.

Justice Idris, who expressed sympathy for the victim, opted to continue with the hearing without delay and subsequently took testimonies from the prosecution witnesses.

Defence Seeks Time For Family Intervention

Defence counsel Noah Abdul later appealed for an adjournment to allow both families engage in discussions on possible assistance and support for the victim.

In an emotional moment during proceedings, the defendant reportedly expressed remorse and apologised to Edache for the injuries sustained.

The prosecution did not oppose the request for adjournment.

Matter Adjourned Till June 9

Justice Idris subsequently adjourned the matter until June 9, 2026, for definite hearing.

The defendant was ordered to remain in custody at a correctional facility pending the continuation of trial.

The case highlights growing concerns over violent neighbourhood disputes escalating into life-altering criminal incidents within the Federal Capital Territory.
