Internal police probe uncovers alleged criminal network involving serving officers accused of kidnapping civilians, forcing bank and cryptocurrency transfers, and operating illegal patrols across Rivers State.

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed five officers and arrested several others following the discovery of an alleged criminal syndicate involving serving personnel accused of kidnapping, armed robbery, extortion, and abuse of office in Rivers State.
The scandal, which has intensified public scrutiny of police accountability and internal discipline, reportedly involved officers conducting illegal stop-and-search operations, abducting victims, and coercing them into surrendering funds through bank and cryptocurrency applications.
In a statement released Friday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Anthony Okon Placid, described the officers’ conduct as a “gross betrayal of the ethics, standards, and professional values of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Internal Cleansing Uncovers Alleged Criminal Enterprise
According to police authorities, the arrests emerged from an ongoing internal cleansing exercise targeted at rooting out criminal elements operating within the Force.
Investigators reportedly uncovered a network of serving officers attached to Zone 16 Headquarters in Yenagoa who allegedly carried out armed robbery, kidnapping, and extortion activities while masquerading as legitimate patrol teams in Port Harcourt and surrounding communities.
Police sources said victims were intercepted during unlawful patrol operations and subjected to intimidation at gunpoint before being forced to unlock banking applications and cryptocurrency wallets.
Authorities disclosed that millions of naira were extorted from victims through electronic transfers.
The Force further confirmed that three additional suspects linked to the syndicate remain at large.
Vehicles, Cash Recovered During Investigation
As part of the investigation, police operatives reportedly recovered three Toyota Sienna buses allegedly used for the operations.
The Force also traced and recovered ₦7,338,800 believed to be proceeds of the alleged criminal activities.
Investigators suspect the syndicate may have operated across several locations in Rivers State, targeting unsuspecting civilians under the guise of routine police patrols.
Security analysts say the revelations expose growing concerns over the misuse of tactical policing operations and the increasing intersection between cybercrime-related extortion and abuse of state authority.
Separate Syndicate Allegedly Operated Within Rivers Command
In what police authorities described as a separate but related investigation, another group of officers formerly attached to the Department of Operations of the Rivers State Police Command was also implicated in organised criminal activity.
The five dismissed officers were accused of participating in kidnapping, extortion, theft, and official corruption.
According to findings from orderly room proceedings, the officers allegedly abducted citizens, confiscated valuables, and compelled victims to transfer money from personal bank accounts and cryptocurrency platforms.
Police authorities said the officers disguised their operations as legitimate security patrols, thereby exploiting public trust and institutional authority.
Following disciplinary proceedings, all five officers were dismissed from service.
Criminal Prosecution Looms
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that case files relating to the dismissed officers have been forwarded for prosecution.

The Force Headquarters urged Nigerians to continue reporting cases of police misconduct, human rights violations, extortion, and abuse of office through official complaint channels.
Authorities insisted that disciplinary mechanisms remain active and that criminal conduct within the Force would not be tolerated regardless of rank or assignment.
The dismissal and arrest of police officers allegedly involved in kidnapping and crypto-related extortion underscore the deep institutional challenges confronting Nigeria’s policing system.
