Agbor, Delta State – Fresh concerns over the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s railway system have emerged following the derailment of a passenger train operating on the Warri–Itakpe corridor, leaving at least three passengers dead and several others affected.
The incident, which occurred on Monday along the Agbor axis of Delta State, triggered a swift emergency response from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), security agencies, and other emergency responders.
The latest tragedy has reignited public debate over recurring derailments on Nigerian rail lines and the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to modernize and secure the nation’s rail transport network.
NRC CONFIRMS DERAILMENT, CASUALTIES
Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation disclosed that the derailment involved the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS), one of the country’s most strategic rail corridors linking Delta, Edo, Kogi and adjoining regions.
In a statement issued by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, the corporation acknowledged the accident and confirmed that emergency teams had been mobilized to the scene.
According to the NRC, rescue efforts commenced immediately after the incident was reported, with personnel working to assist affected passengers and assess the extent of damage.
While authorities initially withheld casualty figures pending verification, subsequent reports confirmed that three passengers lost their lives in the accident.
The corporation said a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the derailment.
NEMA ACTIVATES EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Following reports of the accident, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, reportedly activated the agency’s emergency response protocol.
NEMA deployed a specialized Emergency Response Team to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts and support affected passengers.
According to the agency, its personnel are working closely with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, security agencies, healthcare providers and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of survivors and facilitate emergency operations.
The agency also disclosed that its Director-General had maintained direct communication with the NRC leadership to monitor developments and provide necessary support.
Officials said priority attention was being given to evacuation, medical assistance and passenger welfare.
INCIDENT OCCURS WEEKS AFTER SERVICE RESUMPTION
The derailment has raised fresh questions because it occurred less than a month after the NRC suspended operations on the Warri–Itakpe corridor.
The corporation had temporarily halted services following technical recommendations from its engineering teams, citing the need for critical operational assessments.
At the time, railway authorities assured the public that the suspension was intended to enhance safety, improve reliability and address operational concerns before services resumed.
The latest accident is therefore likely to intensify calls for a comprehensive review of maintenance standards, inspection procedures and infrastructure integrity across the railway network.
HISTORY OF DERAILMENTS FUELS SAFETY CONCERNS
Monday’s accident is not an isolated occurrence.
The Warri–Itakpe corridor experienced another derailment in November 2025, which railway authorities attributed to acts of vandalism.
The NRC later announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with that incident.
Similarly, in August 2025, a passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed shortly after departure, causing panic among passengers and sparking national concern about rail safety.
Although no major casualties were recorded in that incident, it intensified scrutiny of railway operations and infrastructure management.
The repeated occurrence of derailments has raised concerns among transportation experts regarding track conditions, rolling stock maintenance, operational oversight and security vulnerabilities.
SENATE INVESTIGATION STILL UNDER SPOTLIGHT
The recurrence of rail accidents has also drawn legislative attention.
In November 2025, the Senate resolved to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the persistent derailments affecting Nigeria’s railway network.
The probe was mandated to identify the root causes of the accidents, evaluate the quality of imported rail materials and assess the condition of existing rail infrastructure nationwide.
Transportation analysts argue that findings from such investigations must translate into concrete reforms if public confidence in rail transportation is to be restored.
EXPERTS CALL FOR COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY AUDIT
Industry observers say the latest derailment highlights the urgent need for a nationwide rail safety audit.
Experts note that as Nigeria continues investing billions of naira in rail modernization projects, equal attention must be given to maintenance, inspection protocols, security protection and emergency preparedness.
They argue that passenger safety must remain the primary benchmark for measuring the success of rail sector reforms.
Several transport policy advocates have also called for the publication of previous accident investigation reports to improve transparency and public accountability.
