Nigeria’s security agencies have recorded significant operational breakthroughs in the North-West, rescuing dozens of kidnap victims, recovering rustled livestock and arresting suspected criminals in coordinated operations involving the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and local security outfits.
However, the successes have been overshadowed by fresh violence in Rivers State, where gunmen assassinated a former local government Chief Security Officer, highlighting the complex and evolving nature of insecurity across the country.
The latest incidents illustrate the dual reality confronting Nigeria’s security architecture: while coordinated intelligence-led operations continue to produce measurable successes against criminal networks, armed banditry, kidnapping, cult-related violence and rural terrorism remain persistent threats demanding sustained military, police and community collaboration.
Police Rescue 32 Kidnap Victims in Sokoto After Fierce Gun Battle
Security Forces Foil Major Bandit Operation
The Sokoto State Police Command has rescued 32 kidnapped victims after foiling a major bandit operation in Maikujera Village, Rabah Local Government Area, during a joint security operation with the Nigerian Army.
According to the Sokoto State Police Command, armed bandits invaded the remote community bordering Zamfara State on Tuesday, attacking residents, rustling livestock and abducting dozens of villagers.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Rabah reportedly received an emergency distress call immediately after the attackers struck.
Recognising the scale of the assault, the DPO mobilised tactical police formations, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Violent Crime Reaction Unit (VCRU), while simultaneously coordinating with the Nigerian Army’s Forward Operating Base to seal possible escape routes.
Bandits Forced to Abandon Victims
Security sources disclosed that the combined security team engaged the fleeing criminals in a prolonged gun battle.
Unable to withstand superior firepower, the bandits abandoned both their captives and rustled livestock before escaping into nearby forests.
Subsequent search-and-clear operations led to the rescue of all 32 kidnapped victims, comprising:
- Six adult men
- Twenty-six females
- Majority being children
According to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, the rescued victims have been relocated to secure facilities where they are receiving medical attention, trauma counselling and psychological support before reunification with their families.
Four Residents Killed Before Security Arrival
Despite the successful rescue operation, police confirmed that four residents were killed during the initial attack before reinforcement arrived.
Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Shaffa, described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to bereaved families.
He assured residents that security agencies are intensifying efforts to identify, track and arrest the fleeing attackers.
The Commissioner also urged communities to strengthen cooperation with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements and criminal activities.

Kidnap Victim Rescued During Military Offensive
Elsewhere in the North-West, troops of Sector Two, Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, rescued another kidnap victim during operations in Charanchi Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Military authorities disclosed that troops responded swiftly to intelligence reports indicating terrorist activities around Karkata Village.
While advancing toward the location, troops encountered heavily armed terrorists and engaged them in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Facing sustained military pressure, the terrorists abandoned their captive and escaped into surrounding forests.
The rescued victim was unharmed and later reunited with family members.
Joint Raid Leads to Arrests and Weapons Recovery
In a separate intelligence-led operation, troops partnered with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to conduct coordinated raids across Wagin, Tundu Mobi and Chadawaki communities in Batsari Local Government Area.
The operation resulted in:
- Arrest of multiple suspects.
- Recovery of a locally fabricated firearm.
- Seizure of five live cartridges.
- Collection of additional incriminating exhibits.
Military authorities confirmed that all suspects and recovered exhibits have been transferred to the NDLEA for further investigation and possible prosecution.
126 Rustled Livestock Recovered
Operation FANSAN YAMMA also achieved another breakthrough after troops, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted suspected terrorists attempting to move rustled livestock through Yankwani Village in Bakori Local Government Area.
Unable to withstand military pursuit, the suspects fled into nearby forests.
Security operatives recovered:
- 83 cows
- 43 sheep
The total of 126 recovered animals has since been handed over to the Bakori Peace Keeping Committee in the presence of local government officials for identification and return to their rightful owners.
The Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA commended troops for their professionalism and assured residents that offensive operations against terrorists would continue across the North-West.
Gunmen Kill Former Khana Security Chief, Renew Fear in Rivers Community
Assassination Sparks Panic in Bori
While security forces celebrated operational successes in the North-West, another violent attack unfolded in Rivers State.
Gunmen shot dead Mr. Letam Kine, a former Chief Security Officer of Khana Local Government Area, along Polytechnic Road in Bori, headquarters of Khana LGA.
Eyewitnesses said multiple gunshots sent residents, commuters and students fleeing before the attackers escaped through nearby bushes.
The killing temporarily paralysed commercial activities, forcing traders to shut businesses amid fears of further violence.
Cult Violence Suspected
Residents believe the attackers may be linked to cult-related criminal gangs that have increasingly threatened peace in Ogoni communities.
The incident occurred only weeks after another fatal attack within the area, heightening fears that organised armed groups may be expanding their operations.
Khana Local Government Chairman, Dr. Thomas Bariere, condemned the murder, describing it as a senseless act intended to destabilise the local government.
He called on security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation and ensure all perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that investigations have commenced while security patrols have been intensified.
Ogun Police Smash Cattle Theft Syndicate, Rescue Kidnap Target
Swift Response Frustrates Criminal Operations
In Ogun State, police operatives arrested two suspected cattle thieves following the theft of seven cows from a cattle settlement in the Maskoli area of Sagamu.
The suspects, identified as Abiodun Kamilu (35) and Adesanya Segun (37), were intercepted along the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway after coordinated surveillance and intelligence gathering.
Police recovered:
- Six stolen cows.
- Operational vehicle used by the suspects.
Efforts are ongoing to arrest additional members of the syndicate and recover the remaining livestock.
Police Foil Suspected Kidnap Attempt
In another operation, officers attached to the Safer Highway Patrol responded immediately after hearing gunshots near Onigaari along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Their rapid deployment forced suspected kidnappers to abandon their intended victim before escaping into surrounding bushes.
The victim was rescued unharmed and escorted to safety.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised officers for their professionalism, stating that intelligence-driven policing and rapid response remain central to the command’s crime prevention strategy.
Security Analysis: Progress Recorded, But Structural Challenges Persist
The latest operations demonstrate improved coordination between the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, NDLEA and community security structures.
Security analysts attribute the successes to:
- Improved intelligence sharing.
- Joint tactical operations.
- Faster response to distress calls.
- Increased collaboration among security agencies.
- Community-based intelligence gathering.
However, analysts caution that isolated operational victories do not necessarily indicate a decline in Nigeria’s broader security threats.
Banditry, kidnapping, cult violence, cattle rustling and organised criminal networks continue to exploit difficult terrain, weak rural infrastructure and porous interstate borders.
Experts argue that sustainable security will require not only offensive military operations but also expanded surveillance technology, stronger border security, improved policing, judicial reforms, socioeconomic interventions and enhanced community participation.
The rescue of 32 kidnap victims in Sokoto, successful military operations in Katsina and police interventions in Ogun underscore the growing effectiveness of coordinated security operations across parts of Nigeria.
Yet, the assassination of a former local government security official in Rivers State serves as a stark reminder that criminal violence remains deeply entrenched in many parts of the country.
For Nigeria’s security agencies, the challenge extends beyond tactical victories. Sustaining public confidence will depend on translating isolated successes into long-term reductions in violent crime through intelligence-led policing, inter-agency cooperation, institutional accountability and continuous investment in security infrastructure.
As the Federal Government intensifies efforts to combat insecurity nationwide, citizens continue to demand not only prompt responses to attacks but also lasting peace, justice and protection of lives and property.
