ADC Convention 2026: Party Amends Constitution, Ratifies David Mark-Led NWC Amid Tinubu Criticism

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has concluded its 2026 national convention in Abuja, approving key constitutional amendments and ratifying a new National Working Committee (NWC) led by David Mark.

The convention also became a platform for opposition leaders to criticise the administration of Bola Tinubu over worsening economic and security conditions.

Delegates at the convention overwhelmingly voted to amend the party’s constitution, with 1,471 out of 1,576 accredited voters supporting the changes, representing 94 percent approval.

The results were announced by Emeka Ihedioha, chairman of the ADC Electoral Sub-Committee, who confirmed the adoption of the revised constitution at the Abuja gathering.

Key resolutions ratified included the suspension of zoning provisions for executive positions, waivers on membership requirements, and adjustments to succession rules within the party.

The convention also formally dissolved the previous NWC led by Ralph Nwosu and confirmed the assumption of office by the Mark-led leadership.

In addition, the party announced the expulsion of several members, including factional chairman Nafiu Bala and lawmaker Leke Abejide, over alleged anti-party activities.

Prominent political figures used the platform to criticise the Federal Government’s handling of the economy and security.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of undermining democracy, alleging institutional bias.

Similarly, Peter Obi warned that Nigeria’s rising debt profile could push the country toward economic instability, while Rotimi Amaechi raised concerns over worsening insecurity across parts of the country.

ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola described the government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda as ineffective, urging urgent corrective measures.

Leadership Crisis Persists Within ADC
Despite the convention’s resolutions, internal divisions within the ADC remain unresolved.

Multiple factions continue to lay claim to the party’s leadership, including groups aligned with Nafiu Gombe and Dumebi Kachikwu.

The crisis, which began after disputes over the tenure of former chairman Ralph Nwosu, has led to prolonged legal battles and competing conventions.

INEC’s earlier decision not to monitor the convention, citing a court order to maintain the status quo, further underscores the uncertainty surrounding the party’s internal structure.

The convention signals ADC’s attempt to reposition itself as a viable opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, unresolved factional disputes and legal uncertainties could weaken its credibility and electoral prospects if not addressed swiftly.
