ADC Demands INEC Chairman’s Resignation, Alleges Plot to Undermine Nigeria’s Democracy Ahead of 2027

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation or removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, accusing the electoral body of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process.

The party alleged that INEC’s recent actions reflect bias and a deliberate attempt to weaken opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

ADC Declares Loss of Confidence in INEC

Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja, ADC National Chairman, David Mark, said the party has completely lost confidence in the electoral umpire.

He described INEC’s actions as unlawful and a direct assault on democratic principles, alleging that the commission has taken sides in the party’s internal leadership dispute.

Allegations of Court Contempt and Political Bias

Mark accused INEC of acting in contempt of a Court of Appeal ruling by withdrawing recognition of the party’s leadership.

He argued that the commission’s decision to recognise multiple factions within the ADC amounts to creating a “false equivalence” and an artificial leadership crisis.

According to him, the party’s current leadership emerged from a duly constituted National Executive Committee meeting held in July 2025 and was formally communicated to INEC.

Claims of Wider Political Agenda

The ADC further alleged that the actions of INEC are part of a broader strategy linked to the administration of President Bola Tinubu to weaken opposition parties.

Mark warned that such moves could pave the way for a one-party system, despite ongoing national challenges such as insecurity and economic hardship.

Concerns Over Upcoming Elections

The party expressed fears that INEC’s conduct could compromise the credibility of upcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.

It also warned that the commission’s stance could disrupt its planned congresses and national convention scheduled for April.

Call for Domestic and International Attention

The ADC urged Nigerians and the international community to closely monitor the situation, describing it as a critical moment for the country’s democratic future.

Mark stressed that the party would continue its political activities regardless of INEC’s position.

Demand for Immediate Action

“We demand the immediate resignation or sack of the INEC Chairman and all National Commissioners. We are convinced they are incapable of conducting any credible election,” Mark stated.

He added that the issue goes beyond party politics and represents a broader struggle to safeguard democratic freedoms in Nigeria.

The ADC’s strong stance underscores rising tensions between opposition parties and the electoral commission, raising fresh concerns over the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process as the 2027 elections approach.
