A political confrontation has erupted between the camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Presidency over comments attributed to presidential aide Bayo Onanuga regarding the 2027 presidential race.
The exchange has reignited debate over zoning, tenure expectations, and the constitutional limits of power rotation in Nigeria’s political system.
Fresh Clash Over Rotation Politics
The dispute followed remarks by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, who reportedly defended the view that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should complete eight years in office under an informal North-South power rotation arrangement.
Onanuga’s position, linked to his reaction to a televised interview by Atiku Abubakar, has drawn strong opposition criticism, with Atiku’s camp describing the argument as unconstitutional and politically divisive.
Atiku Camp Pushes Back
Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, responded in a detailed statement posted on social media platform X, rejecting what he termed an attempt to “rewrite the Constitution” through political interpretation.
Shaibu argued that Nigeria’s constitution does not provide for enforceable power rotation, insisting that leadership is determined solely through elections.
He further accused the presidency of hypocrisy and selective interpretation of zoning principles, stating that political conventions cannot override democratic competition.
Rising Political Tensions Ahead of 2027
The opposition spokesman also dismissed claims linking the 2023 election outcome to zoning arrangements, arguing instead that electoral irregularities and institutional challenges shaped the result.
He criticised references to historical political transitions as justification for current political positions, describing such arguments as inappropriate in a constitutional democracy.
Shaibu maintained that Nigeria belongs to its citizens and not to any political arrangement or elite consensus, insisting that voter choice remains the ultimate determinant of leadership.
Counterclaims and Opposition Position
He also dismissed suggestions that opposition coalitions involving figures such as Peter Obi were unstable, describing such narratives as politically motivated.
According to him, Atiku Abubakar remains fully committed to the 2027 presidential race and will not be deterred by political commentary from government officials.
The exchange has intensified existing political fault lines between the ruling party and opposition figures as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
