The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has described the ongoing WNBA tour of the national women’s team, D’Tigress, as a deliberate long-term investment aimed at strengthening the future of Nigerian basketball.

Tour Focused on Development, Not Results

Chairman of the NBBF Marketing and Sponsorship Committee, Ugo Udezue, said the tour was designed to prioritise growth, exposure, and team rebuilding rather than immediate victories.

According to him, the experience gained from competing against top WNBA sides is critical to developing a new generation of players capable of sustaining Nigeria’s dominance in African basketball.

Tough Matches Against Elite Opposition

D’Tigress have faced strong competition during the tour, including fixtures against Los Angeles Sparks and Minnesota Lynx, where they suffered defeats but showed competitive promise.

The team is scheduled to conclude the tour with a final game against Portland Fire on May 3 in Portland.

Youth Integration at the Core

The NBBF fielded a 21-player squad, with only a handful of players from the core team that secured recent continental and global qualification successes.

Udezue explained that the selection strategy was intentional, aimed at blending experienced players with emerging talents to build depth and continuity within the squad.

He emphasised that integrating younger players into high-level competition is essential for long-term success.

Preparing for Future Competitions

D’Tigress remain Africa’s dominant force, having maintained an unbeaten record against continental opponents since 2015.

The team is now focused on preparations for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany, with attention on managing generational transition within the squad.

The recent retirement of long-serving guard Sarah Ogoke underscores the need for fresh talent to step up.
