FIFA has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite escalating geopolitical tensions involving the United States and the wider Middle East.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino made the announcement on Thursday during the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, stating unequivocally that Iran’s qualification and participation in the tournament remain unaffected.
“Let me start by confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said.
He further disclosed that Iran is scheduled to face the United States during the tournament, adding a layer of political sensitivity to the fixture.
The confirmation comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions, including a reported US naval blockade of Iranian ports and ongoing military developments involving Iran and Israel, as well as their regional allies.
Geopolitical Tensions Escalate
Earlier in the day, Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the US blockade, describing it as “intolerable” and warning that it represents an extension of military aggression.
At the same time, hostilities have intensified along Israel’s northern border, with reports of deeper military incursions into southern Lebanon and continued strikes targeting Hezbollah positions.
FIFA Maintains Tournament Schedule
Despite the volatile security environment, FIFA has reiterated that preparations for the expanded 2026 World Cup—set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico—remain firmly on course.
The global football body emphasised that all qualified teams will participate, underscoring its commitment to maintaining sporting neutrality amid political tensions.
