The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names and personal particulars of candidates contesting the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, granting political stakeholders an additional three days to complete the exercise.
The commission announced that political parties now have until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, to upload the credentials of their presidential, Senate and House of Representatives candidates through its online nomination portal.
The decision followed a formal appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which informed the electoral body that several political parties were unable to meet the original deadline due to operational and administrative challenges.
The extension, while offering temporary relief to affected political parties, underscores the logistical pressures surrounding Nigeria’s electoral calendar as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Extension Follows Formal Appeal by Political Parties
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Mohammed Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the request for additional time was conveyed officially through IPAC.
Haruna explained that numerous political parties had encountered difficulties uploading the names and personal particulars of their nominated candidates before the earlier deadline of Saturday, July 11.
“The decision to extend was based on the appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council, on behalf of political parties who were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline,” the statement read.
The commission subsequently approved a short extension to ensure broader compliance with electoral requirements without disrupting the overall timetable for the 2027 elections.
Revised Timeline Preserves Electoral Calendar
INEC emphasized that the extension does not alter the broader election timetable already released for the 2027 general elections.
Under the revised schedule, political parties are expected to complete all candidate nominations before the new deadline, after which the commission will proceed with verification and subsequent stages of the electoral process.
