The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met with political party leaders at its Abuja headquarters to present and deliberate on new guidelines for the 2027 general elections. The move follows the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires updated procedures to ensure free, fair, and credible polls.

Chairmen, secretaries, and representatives from major political parties attended the session, including Senator Nenadi Usman for the Labour Party, and Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The meeting focused on presenting newly drafted electoral guidelines and discussing procedural updates to govern campaign conduct, candidate registration, and polling arrangements. INEC emphasized that political parties can no longer operate under outdated regulations.

The commission also outlined preparatory measures, including the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise scheduled to begin online on 18 August 2025, followed by in-person registration from 25 August 2025. A nationwide voter register revalidation will remove duplicates and deceased entries to enhance the electoral roll’s credibility.
