Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is set to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, March 30, 2026, in a move that could reshape Nigeria’s opposition dynamics.

The decision, announced by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, marks a strategic political shift with potential nationwide implications ahead of future elections.

The formal registration is scheduled to take place at Kwankwaso’s residence in Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano, at 12 p.m., according to a statement released by the movement.

The announcement has triggered immediate mobilisation efforts, with supporters across the country directed to register with the ADC at ward, local government, and state levels.

Spokesperson of the movement, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, described the move as a calculated step aimed at strengthening democratic values and promoting inclusive governance.

“We have always been committed to the betterment of our state and the nation,” Mohammed said. “This strategic decision is aimed at reinforcing democratic principles and ensuring leadership that reflects the will of the people.”

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and a prominent political figure with a strong grassroots base, commands significant influence, particularly in northern Nigeria. His movement, Kwankwasiyya, remains one of the most organised political blocs in the region.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has instructed its members not only to join the ADC but to actively participate in party structures and contribute to its expansion at all levels.

The statement emphasised unity and collective responsibility, urging supporters to remain committed to what it described as a new phase in the movement’s political journey.

“We remain resolute in our mission to build a better Nigeria anchored on good governance and the welfare of the people,” Mohammed added.

Kwankwaso’s entry into the ADC introduces a new variable into Nigeria’s opposition equation. With his established grassroots network, the move could reposition the ADC as a more competitive force and influence coalition talks ahead of the next general election cycle.
