The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the assault of a female NYSC member by vigilante operatives in Anambra State, calling the act a gross violation of human dignity. Dr. Tony Ojukwu, NHRC Executive Secretary, urged authorities to ensure accountability under Nigeria’s Anti-Torture Act, 2017.

Vigilante Violence Sparks National Outcry
The NHRC’s condemnation follows the viral circulation of a video showing operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group brutalizing Ms. Jennifer Edema Elohor. The assault, which occurred in July at Oba, Anambra State, highlights growing concerns over the misuse of security groups meant to protect communities.

Dr. Ojukwu described the incident as “inhuman and degrading treatment” and emphasized that such actions violate the Anti-Torture Act, 2017, which criminalizes torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment under any circumstance.

Suppression and Response
According to NHRC investigations, the vigilante operatives initially attempted to suppress the incident until the video surfaced online. The Commission is making efforts to contact Ms. Elohor, who has since relocated, and to facilitate redress. Dr. Ojukwu called on the Inspector-General of Police to provide protection for her and her family to enable participation in the prosecution process.

Call for Accountability
The NHRC Executive Secretary also appealed to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable under the law. “Accountability is crucial to deter future violations and reinforce the rule of law,” he stressed.

Dr. Ojukwu urged citizens to report human rights abuses and reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to securing justice for Ms. Elohor and other victims. The NHRC pledged ongoing collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure full enforcement of the Anti-Torture Act, 2017.
