Defence Headquarters reports major gains against insurgency, banditry and kidnapping as Federal Government unveils technology-driven security strategy for the South-East.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced significant operational gains in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism, banditry and violent crime, revealing that 102 terrorists and other criminal elements were neutralised across multiple theatres of operation in July 2026.
The military also disclosed that 393 kidnapped victims were rescued, 345 suspected terrorists and criminals arrested, while 57 insurgents voluntarily surrendered to troops during the period under review.
The latest operational figures come as the Federal Government unveiled plans to strengthen security architecture in the South-East through the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, including drones, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and a shared regional security database aimed at tackling kidnapping, armed robbery and organised crime.
While the military described the operations as evidence of sustained pressure on criminal networks, security experts maintain that the long-term success of the campaign will depend on intelligence gathering, improved inter-agency coordination and addressing the socio-economic factors fueling insecurity.
DHQ Highlights Nationwide Security Operations
Speaking during the monthly operational briefing in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations (DMO), Major General Michael Onoja, said troops operating under various military formations sustained offensive operations against terrorists, insurgents, kidnappers and armed criminal groups throughout July.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the operations yielded:
- 102 terrorists and criminal elements neutralised
- 345 suspects arrested
- 393 kidnapped victims rescued
- 57 insurgents and their families surrendered
- 59 firearms recovered
- 1,118 rounds of ammunition recovered
The military said the operations were conducted across all major theatres, including the North-East, North-West, North-Central, South-South and South-East.
North-East Records Highest Number of Surrenders
The North-East, where troops continue to battle Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents, recorded some of the most significant gains.
According to DHQ statistics:
- 54 terrorists were neutralised
- 102 suspected terrorists arrested
- 102 kidnapped victims rescued
- 57 insurgents and their family members surrendered
Military authorities attributed the continued surrender of insurgents to sustained military pressure, improved intelligence operations and intensified clearance missions targeting terrorist enclaves.
Security analysts say the increasing number of defections may indicate growing operational challenges within insurgent groups, although concerns remain over the reintegration and monitoring of former fighters.
Operation Fansan Yamma Sustains Pressure in North-West
In the North-West, troops operating under Operation Fansan Yamma continued offensives against armed bandits responsible for widespread kidnappings and attacks on rural communities.
During the month:
- 33 bandits were neutralised
- 66 suspects arrested
- 191 kidnapped victims rescued
The North-West remains one of Nigeria’s most volatile security zones, with criminal gangs carrying out mass abductions, cattle rustling and attacks on villages across several states.
Military authorities said sustained operations are gradually disrupting criminal logistics and weakening bandit strongholds.
North-Central Operations Target Armed Criminal Networks
Operations across the North-Central geopolitical zone also recorded notable successes.
According to DHQ:
- 15 terrorists and armed criminals were killed
- 148 suspects arrested
- 53 kidnapped victims rescued
The region has experienced persistent attacks linked to armed groups, communal violence and criminal syndicates operating along major highways and rural communities.
The military said intensified joint operations are aimed at restoring confidence among residents and improving security across affected states.
South-South and South-East Operations Continue
Military operations also extended to Nigeria’s southern regions.
The Defence Headquarters reported that:
South-South
- 37 kidnapped victims rescued
- Three criminal suspects arrested
South-East
- 10 kidnapped victims rescued
- 26 suspected criminals arrested
The military said security forces remain committed to tackling criminal gangs, armed separatist elements and kidnapping syndicates operating within the regions.
Government Unveils Technology-Driven Security Initiative
The operational update coincides with the Federal Government’s announcement of plans to strengthen security in the South-East through modern surveillance technologies.
According to government officials, the initiative will include:
- Deployment of surveillance drones.
- Installation of CCTV cameras.
- Creation of a shared regional security database.
- Enhanced intelligence sharing among security agencies.
- Technology-driven crime monitoring systems.
Authorities believe the measures will improve intelligence gathering and support efforts to combat kidnapping, armed robbery and other organised crimes.
Security experts, however, stress that technological investments must be complemented by efficient policing, judicial reforms and community engagement to achieve lasting results.
Weapons Recovery Signals Pressure on Criminal Networks
The recovery of 59 firearms and 1,118 rounds of ammunition during July operations represents another significant aspect of the military’s campaign.
According to defence analysts, disrupting access to weapons weakens the operational capabilities of terrorist groups and criminal gangs while reducing their ability to launch coordinated attacks.
However, experts continue to call for stronger border security to curb the illicit flow of arms into Nigeria.
Security Challenges Persist Despite Operational Gains
Despite the military’s reported successes, insecurity remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing national challenges.
Communities across several states continue to grapple with:
- Terrorist attacks.
- Kidnappings for ransom.
- Armed banditry.
- Farmer-herder conflicts.
- Communal violence.
- Attacks on critical infrastructure.
Analysts argue that while tactical victories are encouraging, sustainable peace will require improved intelligence capabilities, stronger collaboration among security agencies, economic development and effective governance.
The Defence Headquarters’ latest operational report underscores the Nigerian Armed Forces’ continued efforts to degrade terrorist and criminal networks across the country.
With 102 terrorists neutralised, 393 kidnapped victims rescued and hundreds of suspects arrested in July alone, the military says it remains committed to restoring peace and protecting communities.
