The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has resigned from her position, becoming the third member of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet to step down ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Her resignation follows a presidential directive mandating political appointees with ambitions to contest elective offices in 2027 to vacate their positions.

Resignation Comes After Deadline

Onyejeocha announced her decision on Friday via a resignation letter shared on her social media platforms, just days after the March 31 deadline set by the Presidency.

While confirming her exit, she did not disclose the specific elective office she intends to contest.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I announce my resignation as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she stated.

Gratitude to Tinubu, Cabinet, Nigerians

The former minister expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and Nigerians for the opportunity to serve.

“This decision comes with profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the opportunity to serve Nigeria in his administration,” she said.

She described her time in office as a significant chapter in her public service journey, noting that her exit marks “not an end but a new beginning.”

Highlights of Her Tenure

Onyejeocha commended staff of the Ministry of Labour and Employment for their professionalism and contributions, particularly in advancing workers’ rights, improving workplace safety, and promoting job creation initiatives.

She also extended appreciation to her constituents in Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, whom she represented in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023.

Wave of Cabinet Exits Ahead of 2027

Her resignation follows similar moves by other cabinet members, including the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, both of whom stepped down to pursue governorship ambitions in Gombe and Bauchi states, respectively.

The development signals the early political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as members of the current administration begin to position themselves for future contests.
