Heated exchange over procedural rulings briefly stalls legislative business in the Senate

Proceedings at the Nigerian Senate were temporarily disrupted on Tuesday after a heated confrontation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole escalated into a tense exchange that stalled plenary for more than 15 minutes.
Disruption Begins During Votes and Proceedings
The incident occurred as Senate President Akpabio was presenting the Votes and Proceedings from a previous legislative session. Tension first surfaced when the chamber moved to discussions linked to the South Africa debate, prompting Senator Oshiomhole to raise a point of order.
Akpabio declined to recognise him, citing provisions of the Senate Standing Orders (2023 as amended), a decision that immediately sparked pushback from the former Edo State governor.
Repeated Interventions Escalate Tension
The disagreement intensified when the Senate later considered amendments to its Standing Rules. Oshiomhole again attempted to interject, but was repeatedly ruled out of order.
Several lawmakers, including former Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu, backed the presiding officer, noting that procedural rules restrict points of order during that phase of proceedings.
Despite interventions, Oshiomhole maintained his position, prolonging the standoff.
Warning Issued as Order Breaks Down
The situation escalated further when Chief Whip Senator Tahir Monguno cautioned Oshiomhole, warning that continued disruption could attract disciplinary action under Senate rules.
A visibly firm Akpabio eventually issued a direct warning, stating: “If you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate.”
The remark underscored the rising tension inside the chamber as proceedings momentarily broke down.
Plenary Resumes After Order Restored
Order was eventually restored after several minutes of intervention from senior lawmakers. The Senate proceeded to adopt the Votes and Proceedings following a motion moved by Senator Adamu Aliero and seconded by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro.
The brief but intense confrontation highlights recurring procedural tensions within the Senate, where interpretations of standing rules often trigger clashes between lawmakers and presiding officers.
