PDP Convention to Proceed Despite Court Dispute, Caretaker Committee Insists

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that its scheduled national convention will proceed despite ongoing legal disputes and internal divisions. Party officials say all arrangements are in place, dismissing claims of any court order halting the exercise.

The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) of the PDP says it has not received any court directive stopping the party’s convention slated for March 29 and 30, 2026, in Abuja.

Speaking at a press briefing, the committee’s publicity secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated that the party has complied with all constitutional and legal requirements to conduct the convention.

He said the leadership has finalised logistics to ensure a credible, inclusive, and transparent process, urging party members to remain calm amid attempts to disrupt the exercise.

The position comes amid opposition from a rival faction led by Tanimu Turaki, which has challenged the legality of the earlier Ibadan convention and reportedly filed an appeal seeking to halt the new gathering.

Despite the legal tussle, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has also backed the convention, insisting it will go ahead as planned.

Wike, who inspected the venue at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja, said the appeal filed by the Turaki group does not invalidate the convention.

He added that while internal grievances exist, reconciliation efforts will continue after the convention.

According to him, the PDP has already completed zoning arrangements, allocating the presidential ticket to the South and the national chairmanship to the North in a bid to foster consensus.

The minister noted that the party is “about 95 percent ready,” with seating and logistics concluded for an estimated 2,500 delegates.

Legal Dispute Fails to Halt Convention Plans
The Turaki-led faction has challenged the legitimacy of the convention process, citing a Court of Appeal judgment that nullified a previous gathering. However, the caretaker committee insists no enforceable order exists to stop the current exercise.

PDP leaders acknowledge internal disagreements but maintain that reconciliation remains ongoing. Officials say the convention is designed to consolidate party structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
