The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 15 suspects in connection with alleged sexual assaults in Oramudu Quarters, Ozoro, describing the acts as criminal and “in no way representative of any legitimate cultural practice.”

The arrests followed a directive by the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, who ordered an intensive investigation into the incident that has triggered widespread outrage and heightened fears over public safety in Delta State.

Police Act on Intelligence, Video Evidence

Spokesman of the Command, Bright Edafe, disclosed that operatives of the Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), acting on credible intelligence and a detailed review of video footage, arrested the alleged mastermind, Omorede Sunday, alongside 14 others.

Other suspects identified include Samson Atukpodo, Steven Ovie, Ugbevo Samson, Afoke Akporobaro, and Evidence Oguname.

Edafe described the arrests as a major breakthrough, noting that preliminary findings point to “criminal elements who exploited the situation to perpetrate sexual violence,” dismissing any attempt to cloak the acts in cultural justification.

Authorities Condemn Acts, Vow Prosecution

Condemning the incident “in totality,” CP Adesola reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that all those involved face the full weight of the law. He stressed that criminality must not be excused under any guise, warning that law enforcement will decisively confront attempts to normalise violence through distorted cultural narratives.

The case has reignited concerns about the misuse of tradition to rationalise abuse, as well as the broader challenge of enforcing accountability in cases of gender-based violence.
