Pope Leo XIV has condemned the escalating wave of violence across Nigeria, expressing deep sorrow over rising casualties and urging authorities to take decisive action to protect civilians.

The Vatican’s intervention comes amid a surge in deadly attacks, placing Nigeria’s security crisis under intensified global scrutiny.

Vatican Raises Alarm Over Nigeria Bloodshed

In a message posted on his official X account, Pope Leo XIV said he received reports of the killings with grave concern, offering prayers for victims of violence and terrorism.

The pontiff called on Nigerian authorities to strengthen efforts toward safeguarding lives and restoring security across affected regions.

His remarks signal growing international unease over the persistence and scale of violence in Africa’s most populous nation.

Kwara Massacre Draws Global Attention

The Pope’s reaction follows a series of coordinated attacks, with Kwara State emerging as the epicentre of the most devastating incident.

Between February 3 and 4, 2026, armed assailants reportedly stormed Woro and Nuku villages in Kaiama Local Government Area, in what residents described as a massacre.

Casualty figures remain contested:

Independent reports estimate up to 162 deaths
Local accounts suggest fatalities may exceed 200
Official figures from police and the state government confirm 75 নিহত

Security operatives have since intensified search-and-recovery operations in surrounding areas as investigations continue.

Federal Government Declares Security Emergency

In response to the attacks, President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of additional troops and the launch of a new military operation in Kaiama.

The Federal Government also declared a nationwide security emergency, signalling a heightened response to escalating threats.

Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Ilorin on February 7, where he met with state officials and sympathised with affected communities.

An army battalion has since been stationed in the area to stabilise the situation and prevent further attacks.

International Community Condemns Attacks

The violence has drawn sharp condemnation from global actors, including the United Nations, the United States, and Türkiye.

These actors described the killings as heinous and called for accountability, justice for victims, and stronger protective measures.

Türkiye also indicated readiness to support Nigeria through enhanced military cooperation, underscoring the international dimension of the crisis.

Rights Groups Cite Security Failures

Human rights organisation Amnesty International criticised Nigerian authorities for what it described as preventable lapses.

According to the group, residents had reportedly issued warnings weeks before the attacks but received inadequate response from security agencies.

The allegations have reignited debate over intelligence gathering, early warning systems, and rapid response capabilities—particularly in rural communities.

Widening Pattern of Nationwide Violence

Beyond Kwara, multiple states have recorded deadly incidents within the same period:

Katsina State: Armed groups reportedly killed between 21 and 35 residents in Doma village during coordinated raids, disrupting a fragile five-month peace arrangement.
Benue State: Suspected armed herdsmen attacked Abande settlement in Kwande LGA, killing at least 16 people, including a Mobile Police officer, and looting a local market.
Niger State: Gunmen struck communities in Agwara and Mashegu LGAs, burning a police station and abducting residents.

The spread of attacks across regions highlights a persistent and evolving security challenge.

The latest wave of violence has intensified calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture. Analysts and stakeholders are demanding:
