ABUJA, NIGERIA — The House of Representatives has ordered the summons of Nigeria’s top security and financial officials over escalating insecurity across the country, demanding detailed explanations on how funds allocated to security agencies have been utilised in the past six months.
The resolution follows mounting public concern over repeated school abductions, attacks on rural communities, and what lawmakers describe as growing gaps in intelligence coordination and operational response.
The decision also includes a directive urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expand forest security architecture nationwide as part of renewed counter-insurgency efforts.
TOP SECURITY AND FINANCE OFFICIALS TO APPEAR BEFORE LAWMAKERS
Under the resolution, the House has summoned key figures across Nigeria’s security and financial architecture, including the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi.
Also invited are the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed.
Lawmakers say the objective is to obtain a comprehensive breakdown of security funding allocations, expenditures, and operational outcomes amid rising public concern over accountability and effectiveness.

The Green Chamber’s resolution specifically seeks clarification on how security funds released over the last six months have been deployed across various agencies.
Legislators argue that despite increased budgetary allocations to defence and internal security, incidents of mass abductions and terrorist attacks continue to rise in several regions of the country.
The House maintained that transparency in security financing is critical to restoring public confidence and improving operational efficiency across security institutions.
RISING WAVE OF SCHOOL ABDUCTIONS TRIGGERS NATIONAL OUTCRY
The resolution comes against the backdrop of a series of high-profile abductions that have sparked nationwide outrage.
In recent weeks, over 40 students and teachers were reportedly kidnapped from schools in Oyo State, while similar attacks in Borno State saw additional students and staff abducted by armed groups.
The incidents have intensified pressure on the Federal Government, with teachers’ unions, civil society organisations, and community groups staging protests demanding urgent rescue operations and stronger protection of schools.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE AND RESCUE EFFORTS
In response to the attacks, the Presidency deployed a high-level delegation to affected communities, including senior security officials and the National Security Adviser.
The delegation reportedly assured residents that the Federal Government was intensifying efforts to secure the release of abducted victims.
The administration also approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards as part of broader efforts to strengthen rural security and improve surveillance in vulnerable areas.
Authorities further directed specialised security units with advanced operational capabilities to intensify rescue missions and disrupt criminal networks behind the attacks.

Lawmakers also urged the President to expand forest guard recruitment across all states experiencing insecurity, noting that vast forest corridors have become operational hideouts for armed groups.
The proposal is modelled after pilot initiatives in selected states, where forest surveillance teams have been deployed to support conventional security forces.
