NSA highlights Tinubu’s reforms, counterterrorism efforts, regional security collaboration during high-level Washington meetings

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has held high-level strategic talks with United States Vice President J.D. Vance and other senior American officials as part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation on security, counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional stability.
The engagements formed part of Ribadu’s three-day working visit to the United States between May 4 and May 6, according to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Ribadu Briefs U.S. On Tinubu’s Security Reforms
During the meeting with Vice President Vance, Ribadu briefed U.S. officials on ongoing reforms and operational strategies being implemented by the Federal Government to tackle insecurity, stabilize conflict-affected communities, and address the root causes of violence across Nigeria.
He also conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s longstanding strategic relationship with the United States.
According to the statement, discussions focused on counterterrorism cooperation, defence collaboration, intelligence sharing, democratic governance, economic resilience, and regional peace efforts.
High-Level Meetings With Top U.S. Officials
Aside from the Vice President, Ribadu also met with Acting U.S. National Security Adviser and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker, and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim.
The meetings reviewed the current state of Nigeria-U.S. relations and explored ways to expand cooperation in addressing emerging security threats across West Africa and the Sahel region.
Focus On Terrorism, Sahel Crisis, Cyber Threats
Ribadu emphasized the need for sustained international cooperation to combat terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organized crime, and cyber threats.
He stressed Nigeria’s position as a frontline state in counterterrorism operations within the Lake Chad Basin and the broader West African sub-region.
The NSA also highlighted the Tinubu administration’s “whole-of-government” security approach, which combines military operations with non-kinetic strategies such as community engagement, economic development, deradicalisation programmes, and regional partnerships.
Nigeria-U.S. Joint Working Group Reviewed
During talks with Undersecretary Allison Hooker at the U.S. Department of State, Ribadu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the roadmap agreed under the Nigeria–U.S. Joint Working Group (JWG).
Both countries reviewed progress on intelligence sharing, military cooperation, border security, strategic communication, humanitarian support, and capacity building for Nigerian security agencies.
The two sides also discussed strengthening institutional coordination and maintaining regular communication channels to address shared security concerns.
U.S. Commends Nigeria’s Regional Leadership
U.S. officials reportedly praised Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting regional peace and security and acknowledged the country’s strategic importance to American interests in Africa.
They reaffirmed support for continued collaboration aimed at promoting democratic governance, economic cooperation, and sustainable peace across West Africa and the Sahel.
The meetings ended with both Nigeria and the United States expressing optimism over the future of their strategic partnership. Both sides pledged to deepen diplomatic engagement and enhance defence and security cooperation in tackling common regional and global challenges.
The visit further underscores Nigeria’s growing diplomatic and security engagement with key international partners amid ongoing efforts to strengthen national and regional stability.
