President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Team Nigeria to rise to the occasion as the 8th edition of the World Athletics Relays kicks off in Gaborone, Botswana, with the nation’s athletes facing formidable opposition in crucial qualifying heats.

Delivering the President’s message, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, charged Nigerian athletes to compete with pride and determination.

According to him, the championship goes beyond medals, serving as a qualifying pathway for major global competitions, including the 2027 World Championships.

The championship, featuring 743 athletes from 40 countries, offers qualification opportunities for both the 2027 World Athletics Championships and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
Nigeria’s participation across all relay events places the team under pressure to deliver strong performances to secure advancement.
Mixed 4x400m Team Faces “Group of Death”
Team Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay squad faces a daunting task after being drawn against powerhouse nations including the Netherlands, Jamaica, Poland, China, Japan, and Canada.
Only the top two teams in each heat, alongside the fastest non-automatic qualifiers, will progress to the final.
The Netherlands enter as favourites with a world-class pedigree, while Poland and Jamaica add depth to an already competitive field. Nigeria, with a respectable record, must produce a near-flawless performance to advance.
Sprint Relay Team Battles Elite Opposition
Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team also faces a stiff test in one of the most competitive heats of the opening round.
Led by top sprinters, the Nigerian quartet will contend with strong teams including Great Britain, South Africa, Brazil, and Ghana.
