Gunmen Kill Traditional Ruler, Family Members in Benue Attack

Gunmen have killed a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and two others in a brutal late-night assault on Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The chilling incident, which occurred on Thursday around 8 p.m., has deepened fears among residents as violence continues to plague rural parts of the state.

Rising Violence

According to eyewitness accounts, four armed men riding on two motorcycles stormed the residence of the district head, identified as Alexander Awodi, and opened fire on him and members of his family. The assailants reportedly spoke the local dialect and even exchanged pleasantries with residents before launching their attack — a deceptive tactic that left the community in shock.

The gunmen were said to have spent nearly 20 minutes at the scene, killing Awodi, his wife Abigail Awodi, their son, and two others in a nearby house before fleeing. One person was also injured during the onslaught.

The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the tragedy, describing it as a cowardly act that once again highlights the growing insecurity in the state. Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet stated that a full-scale investigation had been launched to track down the perpetrators.

Benue, often described as Nigeria’s “food basket,” has endured a series of violent attacks in recent years, ranging from communal clashes to armed invasions that have displaced thousands. The latest killing underscores the persistent security crisis that continues to unsettle rural communities across the state.

Demand for Justice

Local leaders and residents have condemned the killings, urging swift justice and stronger government action. Many expressed frustration over what they see as inadequate protection despite repeated appeals to security agencies.

Community members called for a reinforced security presence to forestall further attacks and restore public confidence. “We are living in fear every day,” one resident lamented. “If a traditional ruler can be killed in his own home, what hope do ordinary people have?”

In response, Benue State authorities have vowed to intensify security operations in the affected areas. While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, the incident has once again brought national attention to the state’s worsening insecurity, with calls growing louder for comprehensive and lasting solutions.
