Abuja, Nigeria — The United States Embassy in Abuja issued a security advisory to American citizens ahead of the #OccupyAsoRock protest, warning them to avoid demonstration venues, large gatherings, and areas likely to experience security disruptions in Nigeria’s capital city.
The advisory came as heavily armed security operatives were deployed across strategic locations in Abuja in anticipation of the protest organised by human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in collaboration with the Take It Back Movement.
The development underscores growing concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, particularly the persistent abduction of schoolchildren, teachers, and other citizens, which has triggered renewed public outrage and calls for government accountability.

The advisory specifically referenced the planned #OccupyAsoRock demonstration called by the Take It Back Movement.
According to the embassy, areas around the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Eagle Square, and the Central Business District were likely to witness increased police presence and possible confrontations between protesters and security personnel.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the ‘Take It Back’ movement has called for protests in Abuja,” the advisory stated.
The mission warned that large-scale demonstrations often attract heavy security deployments and could lead to traffic congestion, movement restrictions, and unforeseen security incidents.
AMERICANS ADVISED TO AVOID PROTEST LOCATIONS
As part of its safety recommendations, the embassy urged American citizens to stay away from all protest venues and avoid areas where large crowds may gather.
