The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), North West University Kano branch, has issued a strong warning to both the Federal and Kano State Governments over delayed payment of allowances under the 2025 ASUU–FGN agreement, cautioning that continued inaction could trigger serious disruption in the university system.

Kano, Nigeria – Tension is mounting within Nigeria’s public university system as academic staff at North West University, Kano, accuse the Federal Government and Kano State authorities of failing to honour key financial commitments contained in the 2025 ASUU–FGN agreement.
The union says unresolved salary-related obligations and delayed allowances are pushing lecturers to a breaking point, with growing concerns that prolonged delays could destabilise academic activities across the institution.
UNPAID ALLOWANCES AND AGREEMENT BREACH CLAIMS
At the centre of the dispute are outstanding payments tied to previously agreed entitlements, including allowances negotiated under the 2025 framework between ASUU and the Federal Government.
The union also raised concerns over the non-implementation of two critical components expected to take effect in January 2026:
- Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA)
- Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA)
ASUU officials argue that these provisions were not optional benefits but agreed obligations meant to improve academic delivery and staff welfare.
“PATIENT IS RUNNING OUT” — UNION SPEAKS
In a statement issued after its congress, Branch Chairperson Comrade Mansur Sa’id said repeated engagements with both the university management and Kano State authorities have yielded no meaningful resolution.
According to him, the continued delay is creating avoidable financial pressure on lecturers while undermining trust in negotiated agreements.
He warned that the situation was becoming increasingly unsustainable for academic staff already operating under challenging economic conditions.
WELFARE CRISIS AND SYSTEMIC RISKS
The union stressed that staff welfare remains directly linked to institutional stability, warning that neglect of agreed obligations could have broader consequences for Nigeria’s higher education system.
ASUU maintained that delays in payment not only worsen personal hardship for lecturers but also lead to growing arrears that could strain government finances further in the future.
The branch emphasised that timely compliance with agreements is essential for preventing industrial disputes and maintaining academic continuity.
CALL FOR URGENT INTERVENTION
ASUU urged the Federal Government, Kano State Government, and relevant education authorities to expedite action on all outstanding entitlements.
The union reiterated its preference for dialogue but made clear that patience was approaching its limit.
It insisted that fulfilling commitments made to university staff was necessary to preserve industrial harmony and sustain academic excellence.
BALANCING DIALOGUE WITH INDUSTRIAL PRESSURE
While reaffirming its willingness to engage constructively, the union cautioned that continued delays without concrete action could force a reassessment of its position.
ASUU stated that it expects “immediate and decisive steps” to address all outstanding issues in the interest of staff, students, and the broader university community.
The latest warning from ASUU’s North West University Kano branch underscores persistent tensions between Nigerian academic staff and government authorities over the implementation of negotiated agreements.
As unresolved allowances continue to pile up, concerns are growing that the dispute could escalate into broader industrial action if urgent intervention is not taken.
For now, the union’s message is clear: agreements must be honoured, or the stability of the university system may be at risk.
