Conflicting accounts emerge as Emir’s palace source disputes police claims of repelling attackers, alleging officers fled before terrorists stormed divisional headquarters and seized weapons.

Yashikira, Kwara State, Nigeria —New allegations have surfaced over the recent terrorist attack on Yashikira, a border community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, with a source close to the Emir’s palace accusing police officers of abandoning their duty posts and leaving behind weapons that were allegedly seized by the attackers.
The allegations directly contradict the official position of the Kwara State Police Command, which maintained that officers on duty successfully repelled an assault on the Yashikira Divisional Police Headquarters during the coordinated attack.
The conflicting narratives have raised serious questions about the preparedness of security agencies operating in vulnerable border communities increasingly exposed to violent attacks, kidnappings, and cross-border criminal activities.
MIDNIGHT ATTACK ROCKS YASHIKIRA COMMUNITY
Yashikira was thrown into panic in the early hours of Sunday when heavily armed attackers reportedly launched simultaneous assaults on the Emir’s palace and the local police divisional headquarters.
Residents said the attack, which occurred around 2:00 a.m., sent hundreds fleeing for safety as gunfire echoed across the community.
According to official reports, the assailants also abducted at least ten residents and set sections of the Emir’s palace ablaze before escaping into surrounding forests.
The incident marks another troubling security breach in Nigeria’s North-Central region, where communities continue to face increasing threats from armed groups operating along porous interstate and international borders.
PALACE SOURCE CHALLENGES OFFICIAL POLICE ACCOUNT
In an account that sharply differs from the police narrative, a palace source alleged that officers attached to the divisional headquarters abandoned the station after receiving intelligence about the approaching attackers.
According to the source, the terrorists encountered little or no resistance when they arrived at the police facility.
The source claimed that the attackers subsequently entered the station and carted away firearms, including AK-47 rifles allegedly left behind by fleeing officers.
The source further questioned the effectiveness of security deployment in the area, arguing that the community had been left vulnerable at a time when residents desperately needed protection.
If verified, the allegations could raise concerns regarding operational readiness, weapons security protocols, and the overall response mechanism of security agencies in high-risk communities.
POLICE INSIST ATTACK WAS REPELLED
The Kwara State Police Command has, however, maintained a different version of events.
In an official statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, authorities described the attack as a “cowardly and audacious” operation carried out by armed criminals targeting both the Emir’s palace and the police divisional headquarters.
According to the statement, officers stationed at the divisional headquarters successfully repelled the attack on the police facility, preventing the assailants from taking control of the station.
The police acknowledged that the attackers succeeded in setting part of the Emir’s palace on fire and abducting ten residents but insisted that the divisional headquarters remained secure during the incident.
The Command further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, had ordered an extensive security operation aimed at rescuing the abducted victims and apprehending those responsible.
SECURITY OPERATIONS INTENSIFIED
Following the attack, police authorities announced the deployment of tactical teams and intensified security operations across Baruten Local Government Area.
According to the Command, intelligence-driven operations, surveillance missions, and bush-combing exercises are currently underway in an effort to locate the kidnappers and prevent further attacks.
Security agencies have also reportedly strengthened patrols around vulnerable communities near the state’s border corridors.
Residents, however, say lasting security improvements will require more than temporary deployments, stressing the need for permanent security infrastructure and rapid-response capabilities in remote communities.
GROWING FEARS OVER BORDER SECURITY
The attack has once again highlighted concerns over security challenges facing communities located near Nigeria’s border regions.
Baruten Local Government Area shares proximity with the Republic of Benin, a factor security experts say presents unique challenges for law enforcement agencies due to the ease of movement across largely ungoverned terrains.
Analysts warn that armed groups often exploit forests, difficult terrain, and weak security presence to launch attacks and evade capture.
The latest incident has renewed calls for enhanced intelligence gathering, improved border surveillance, increased deployment of security personnel, and greater collaboration between local communities and security agencies.
QUESTIONS OVER WEAPONS SECURITY
One of the most serious aspects of the allegations concerns the claim that firearms were abandoned and subsequently seized by attackers.
Security experts note that if weapons from a police facility were indeed captured by criminal elements, such arms could potentially be used in future attacks, thereby worsening insecurity in the region.
However, as of the time of filing this report, no independent verification has confirmed the alleged seizure of weapons from the police station.
Authorities have yet to publicly address the specific claim.
ATTEMPTS TO OBTAIN OFFICIAL RESPONSE
Efforts to obtain further clarification from the Kwara State Police Command regarding the allegations proved unsuccessful at the time of publication.
Calls and messages seeking comments on the claims made by the palace source were not responded to by the police spokesperson.
The Command has yet to issue any additional statement specifically addressing the allegations concerning the alleged abandonment of the station or the reported loss of firearms.
As investigations and security operations continue, the conflicting accounts surrounding the Yashikira attack underscore the urgent need for transparency and accountability in addressing Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
Whether the police successfully repelled the attackers, as officially stated, or whether the station was abandoned as alleged by palace sources, remains a critical question requiring independent verification.
For the residents of Yashikira, however, the immediate concerns remain the safe return of the abducted victims, the restoration of security, and assurances that such attacks will not recur.
