NHRC Demands Action as Plateau Killings Escalate: Stop Violence, Prosecute Perpetrators

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently halt the wave of killings in Jos, Plateau State, and prosecute those responsible. The Commission warned that continued inaction emboldens attackers and puts innocent lives at risk.

Dr. Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, condemned the recent violence, likening it to massacres in Benue, Kaduna, and Zamfara states, where civilians have been targeted in brutal attacks.

Strong Condemnation and Urgent Appeal

“We strongly condemn these senseless killings and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” Ojukwu said, stressing that the Federal Government must act immediately to protect citizens’ fundamental right to life.

He warned that silence and lack of accountability only embolden attackers. “Enough is enough! The government must stop these atrocities and ensure perpetrators face swift and severe justice,” he added.

Call for Security Reinforcement and Justice

The NHRC urged security agencies to:

Deploy additional personnel to vulnerable areas
Prevent further attacks
Conduct thorough investigations into killings
Prosecute perpetrators to serve as a deterrent

Ojukwu also emphasized the need to provide support for victims and survivors, including compensation, medical care, and protection of vulnerable populations.

Addressing Root Causes

Highlighting long-term solutions, Ojukwu stressed that underlying factors such as poverty, inequality, and hate speech must be addressed to prevent future outbreaks of violence.

“The NHRC will not relent in advocating for human rights in Nigeria. Justice must be served for victims and their families. The right to life is non-negotiable—no more bloodshed in this country,” he concluded.

The Commission commended the Plateau State government for initial steps taken but insisted that more decisive actions are required to restore peace.
