A heavy rainstorm that swept through parts of the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday has caused significant damage to the Kugbo Bus Terminal, triggering hours-long traffic gridlock along the busy Nyanya–Keffi Expressway.

The incident, which occurred during an intense downpour accompanied by strong winds, saw sections of the terminal’s roof torn off, with debris spilling onto the highway and obstructing vehicular movement.

Traffic Chaos Along Key Abuja Corridor

The damage led to severe congestion along the Nyanya–Keffi corridor, a major entry route into Abuja from neighbouring Nasarawa State. Motorists and commuters were stranded for hours, with some reporting delays lasting up to three hours.

Eyewitness accounts and videos from the scene showed rubble scattered across the road, compounding traffic pressure on an already busy route, particularly during peak hours.

No Casualties Recorded

Despite the scale of the disruption, officials confirmed that no injuries or vehicle damage were recorded.

In a statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said preliminary reports indicated that the windstorm also caused minor damage to nearby infrastructure, including the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and surrounding buildings.

Emergency Response Activated

Following the incident, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, directed the immediate deployment of security and traffic management personnel to the affected area.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were mobilised to control traffic and restore normal flow, while emergency teams began clearing debris from the highway.

Motorists were advised to exercise patience, adhere to traffic regulations, and avoid reckless driving, especially given the slippery road conditions caused by the rain.

Concerns Over Infrastructure Durability

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the structural resilience of newly constructed public infrastructure in the FCT.

The Kugbo Bus Terminal, a multi-billion-naira project commissioned in June 2025, is yet to commence full operations pending approval from the Federal Executive Council.

Eyewitnesses noted that the impact could have been far more severe if the facility had been fully operational or crowded with passengers at the time of the incident.

Tension at Scene During Media Coverage

Meanwhile, tension briefly escalated at the site when officials reportedly confronted a television crew covering the incident, attempting to seize recording equipment while footage of the damage was being captured.

The development has further intensified scrutiny over transparency and accountability in the handling of public infrastructure projects.

Restoration Efforts Ongoing

Authorities say repairs to the damaged sections of the terminal will begin immediately, while efforts continue to fully restore traffic flow and assess the structural integrity of the facility.
