The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on February 26, 2026, led a high-level delegation from Rivers State on a condolence visit to the family of late Senator Barinada Mpigi in London.

The late lawmaker, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, died at the age of 64 after a brief illness.

Wike described Mpigi’s death as a significant loss to both Rivers State and Nigeria, noting that the late senator was widely respected for his loyalty and political consistency.

He said Mpigi remained “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even during trying times,” highlighting his role within the political landscape of the state and beyond.

The condolence visit brought together key political figures from Rivers State, reflecting the late senator’s influence across party and institutional lines.

Among those in the delegation were Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu.

Also present were the Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Aaron Chukwuemeka, alongside party stakeholders including Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere, and Hon. Dum Deekor.

Final Moments and Passing

Senator Mpigi died in London last Thursday following a brief illness. His death has drawn tributes from political leaders and stakeholders, particularly from Rivers State, where he was regarded as a stabilising figure.

Political Legacy and Influence

Mpigi’s tenure in the National Assembly saw him play a role in legislative processes affecting the Niger Delta region, especially in matters relating to representation and regional development.

Colleagues describe him as a quiet but effective operator who maintained strong political alliances across factions.

Mpigi’s death creates a vacuum in Rivers South-East representation and removes a key political actor within Rivers State’s complex power structure. His absence may influence alignments ahead of future elections and ongoing political negotiations in the state.
