Minister praises elevation of traditional rulers, outlines human capital, road, water, and security initiatives for FCT communities

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commitment to granting equal privileges to the FCT’s indigenous population.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, Wike highlighted recent efforts, including the elevation of traditional rulers and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) for indigenous lands, as part of a broader agenda to recognize their contributions and bring government closer to grassroots communities.
Elevating Indigenous Leadership and Land Rights
Wike emphasized that for the first time in FCT history, deliberate measures are being taken to integrate indigenes into governance structures.
“Everybody comes here and gets land with C of O. What about those who were here before it was made a capital? Must they not benefit also?” Wike asked, noting that President Tinubu has ensured that indigenous landowners enjoy the same opportunities as new arrivals.
The minister described the recognition of traditional leaders as both a tribute to their sacrifices and a means to strengthen community governance across the territory.
Infrastructure Development for Satellite Communities
To reduce the development gap between urban and rural areas, Wike disclosed ongoing road and water projects in FCT satellite towns, aimed at improving connectivity and quality of life.
He also announced the relocation of residents from Kpaduma village near Guzape to the Wasa District, where the government is providing necessary infrastructure to ensure a smooth transition.
On Karu projects, the minister reassured residents that work is progressing on schedule and will be inaugurated during President Tinubu’s third-year anniversary.
Human Capital and Social Services Boost
The FCT Administration has awarded contracts for the renovation of over 200 schools across the territory. Similar attention is being given to the health sector to enhance service delivery.
“These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to improving the lives of FCT residents through education, health, and basic amenities,” Wike stated.
Security Gains and Transportation Reforms
Highlighting progress in public safety, Wike reported significant reductions in robberies linked to the “One Chance” syndicates, thanks to increased support for security agencies.
He added that the opening of new bus terminals across the FCT will help curb illegal transport operations and related crimes, providing a long-term solution to commuter and community safety.
Call for Civic Responsibility and Accountability
Wike urged residents to support ongoing projects through timely payment of taxes, stressing that federal allocations alone are insufficient to fund large-scale development.
He also encouraged citizens to actively hold government accountable, ensuring transparency in the implementation of infrastructure and social initiatives.
Political Commentary and National Issues
On the political front, Wike dismissed claims of being planted to destabilize the PDP, asserting his adherence to the law and party constitution.
He reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu, citing alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda and a commitment to national development.
Addressing recent security incidents in Plateau State, Wike cautioned against politicizing tragedies and emphasized the shared responsibility of federal and state authorities in safeguarding lives.
The FCT Minister’s briefing underscores the administration’s dual focus on recognizing indigenous rights and delivering tangible development, while strengthening security, infrastructure, and human capital across the Federal Capital Territory.
