Seven Injured as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Abuja, Emergency Teams Avert Casualties

At least seven persons sustained injuries on Friday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The incident, which occurred around 11:00 a.m., involved construction workers who were reportedly on site when the structure suddenly gave way.

Workers Trapped as Structure Fails

According to the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), a total of 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building at the time of the collapse.

Emergency responders confirmed that several workers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while one individual at ground level was initially trapped beneath the rubble but was later rescued.

“All the injured workers, including the rescued victim, have been taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi and are responding to treatment,” FEMD said in a statement issued by its Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa.

Swift Multi-Agency Rescue Response

FEMD said its Search and Rescue Team was immediately deployed to the scene, initiating coordinated operations to ensure that no victims remained trapped.

Agencies involved in the rescue effort included the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Department of Development Control, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) Engineering Department, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command.

Excavation of the debris continued to ground level as a precautionary measure to rule out the possibility of additional victims.

Separate Fire Incident Hits Kubwa Facility

In a related development, a fire outbreak was reported the same day at a car sales and service centre along the Kubwa Expressway in Bwari Area Council.

The fire, which started around 12:00 noon at the Car Earloha Chery Centre near Arab Junction, caused extensive property damage but did not result in any casualties.

Electrical Fault Suspected

FEMD officials attributed the cause of the Kubwa fire to an electrical fault.

Staff at the facility reportedly attempted to contain the blaze using fire extinguishers but were unsuccessful. However, they managed to evacuate several vehicles from the premises, reducing potential losses.

A section of the building was destroyed, alongside equipment and important documents.

Emergency teams, including FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command, responded promptly to contain the situation.
