The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of FCT workers during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebrations at Eagle Square, Abuja. Emphasizing the vital role of the workforce in national development, Minister Wike outlined recent reforms and initiatives aimed at restoring dignity, ensuring fair compensation, and boosting productivity across sectors.

FCT Government Demonstrates Dedication to Worker WelfareIn his address, Minister Wike highlighted significant strides made by the FCT administration to improve workers’ conditions. These include restructuring the Civil Service through the establishment of the FCT Civil Service Commission, enabling career advancement to Permanent Secretary and Head of Service roles for the first time in history.
Addressing Allowances and Pension BacklogsHe announced that the administration has cleared all outstanding peculiar allowances and settled 22 months of Rural Allowances for health workers in remote communities, ensuring fair pay regardless of location. Additionally, an eight-month backlog in contributory pension remittances has been resolved, securing the future of the workforce and restoring trust in government commitments.
Education and Judicial Sector ReformsMinister Wike also highlighted proactive measures in the education sector, where wage adjustments prevented primary school teachers’ strikes, safeguarding uninterrupted schooling for FCT children. The judiciary sector has seen the construction of new residences for judges, accommodation for 600 students and staff at the Nigerian Law School, and the digitization of court processes to reduce manual errors and backlog.
